Drunk Tourist Found Asleep on Pattaya Bank Steps

Repeated late-night rescues highlight tensions over alcohol, nightlife and the city's image

PATTAYA, THAILAND – Emergency crews in Pattaya once again woke up a drunk foreign tourist who had fallen asleep on the steps of a bank, underscoring a pattern of alcohol-fueled incidents in the city’s nightlife zones.

Bank steps instead of a hotel bed

Police in Pattaya reportedly found the man late at night lying motionless on the steps of a bank, apparently so heavily intoxicated that he could not move on by himself.

Officers woke him, checked his condition and ensured he left the area safely afterward, turning a potentially risky situation into a routine intervention.

The Naklua case in front of the massage parlor

On 21 March in Naklua, a male tourist had already been discovered asleep in front of a massage parlor, also clearly drunk.

Local residents initially suspected he had collapsed from exhaustion after a massage, but municipal enforcement staff determined he had been drinking elsewhere, gave him water and allowed him to leave only once he was fully oriented again.

A pattern many in Pattaya recognize

Incidents like these appeared minor on the surface, yet residents and long-stay visitors saw them as a symptom of Pattaya’s status as an international entertainment hub.

The city attracted millions of guests every year seeking beaches, nightlife and a brief escape from daily routines, which for some visitors ended in excessive alcohol consumption.

Drunk in public – up to sheer madness

In the early morning hours, heavily intoxicated tourists on sidewalks, on the beach or in front of convenience stores were a common sight, with some falling asleep and others becoming involved in arguments or accidents.

In rare cases, people were even reported running naked through parts of the city, episodes that were unusual but reinforced the impression that personal freedom in the nightlife sometimes tipped into extremes.

Why Pattaya seems to suspend the rules for some

Among residents, the question had circulated for years why someone would travel thousands of kilometers only to end up unconscious or uninhibited on the street.

Observers explained this by saying that Pattaya attracted visitors who felt able to indulge in behaviors in its seemingly permissive party environment that would be socially condemned or legally sanctioned in their home countries.

Relaxed control meets hard reality

In many Western cities, public drunkenness could lead to fines or arrest, and disorderly behavior was quickly curtailed by authorities.

In Pattaya, enforcement in nightlife areas often appeared more relaxed, which critics described as a setting that might unintentionally encourage risky conduct.

Family-friendly image – while old Pattaya still shows at night

City leaders and agencies were working to promote Pattaya as a more family-friendly destination, with upgraded beaches, international events and improved infrastructure.

At the same time, late-night scenes of alcohol and loss of control remained visible, making the task of waking drunk people a routine duty for patrol officers and municipal teams.

“Should Pattaya crack down noticeably harder on public drunkenness, or is it enough to remind guests more strongly about respect and personal responsibility?”

said pattayamail.com, posing the question to its readers.

“What experiences have you had in Pattaya with alcohol excesses, and where should the line between freedom and order be drawn?”

said pattayamail.com, inviting further public debate.
