Monsoon wreaks havoc nationwide
Thailand is bracing for relentless rain as the monsoon tightens its grip. The Thai Meteorological Department (TMD) warns of heavy, sometimes sudden downpours across large parts of the country. Residents must prepare for alternating bursts of severe and lighter rain until October 1.
The provinces of Mae Hong Son, Tak, Chanthaburi, and Trat are at particular risk of flash floods. Even the Chao Phraya River Basin is under close watch, with water levels potentially reaching dangerous heights. Authorities are urging caution and advise checking regular updates for the latest warnings.
From north to south, no region is spared. In the north, 70% of the area faces thunderstorms, particularly in Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, and Tak. In the Isaan region, 60% is affected, especially Khon Kaen and Nakhon Ratchasima. Central Thailand, including Bangkok, sees a 60% chance of storms, while the eastern provinces are hardest hit at 70%. The south is not immune either, with 40% of the west coast under threat.
Bangkok battles rain chaos
The capital city is far from safe. With a 60% likelihood of thunderstorms and temperatures hovering between 26 and 35 degrees Celsius, Bangkok is a steamy, rain-soaked nightmare. Streets can transform into rushing rivers within minutes, creating havoc for commuters and residents alike.
Authorities are on high alert. Pump stations are operational, and sandbags are stacked along vulnerable areas. Yet whether these measures will be enough remains uncertain, as the monsoon shows no signs of letting up.
Extreme season explained
Experts attribute the severe rainfall to a combination of monsoon winds and low-pressure systems. Adding to the challenge, Tropical Storm Mitag, though weakening over China, continues to push moist air masses into Thailand.
For farmers, the rains bring relief, but urban areas face significant challenges. Flooded streets, power outages, and landslides are now daily risks. The Thai government has activated emergency plans and is calling on citizens to stay vigilant.
The monsoon is expected to persist through October, leaving Thailand to endure weeks of soaking rain and hoping for a break in the storm.
