Vendors Suffer Massive Losses as Customers Vanish
Surin’s renowned fresh and sun-dried meat market, near the Hin Khon intersection, is reeling from over three months of border tension.
Supansa, owner of Ae Fresh Meat, says her business has collapsed, with sales dropping by up to 90%. “Before, we earned more than 20,000 baht daily from Cambodian customers alone. Now, it’s only a few thousand if we’re lucky,” she reveals.
The market once relied on Cambodian travellers, who made up the vast majority of buyers. Since the unrest began, these vital cross-border visits have stopped entirely.
Debt and Despair as Unrest Drags On
Vendors like Supansa now struggle to pay bills and keep up with debt. “Some of us have already lost our trucks. We just can’t keep up,” she admits.
Many shopkeepers hesitate to restock, fearing further escalation. Persistent rumours of conflict, including talk of aggression from Cambodian forces, fuel anxiety.
“We’re afraid the conflict might drag on for generations,” Supansa confides.
Calls for Action and Hopes for Stability
With the market nearly deserted, vendors scale back operations, relying on a dwindling number of Thai customers. “We’ve built our lives around border trade. Without it, we’re lost,” Supansa says.
Some support building a permanent border fence if it means restoring peace. “If a fence brings safety and stability, we’ll gladly accept it. At least we could plan our lives again.”
Urgent Plea for Peaceful Resolution
Locals urge officials—especially the military—to intervene and de-escalate the crisis before the damage becomes irreversible.
“This market used to thrive. Now, it’s like a ghost town. We just want tourists and customers back,” one vendor laments.
Surin’s meat vendors hope Thai and Cambodian authorities can negotiate a swift, peaceful solution to save the region’s economy and way of life.
