On Tuesday, October 7, Phuket Marine Police spring into action after a foreign female tourist falls from a speedboat in Ratsada, on the island’s east coast.
The incident happens around 10.30am during a routine patrol by Marine Police Region 3, Division 8. Officers witness the woman attempting to climb back aboard when she slips, landing on the sand as the vessel begins to drift backwards.
Witnesses describe her screams as the boat’s propellers come dangerously close, though the engine is off and the blades are still. Police and crew rush to her aid, pulling her to safety before she is harmed.
She suffers only minor scrapes and receives treatment onshore.
Captain arrested for lacking licence
After the rescue, police inspect the tour boat and discover the operator, identified only as Tharawut, cannot produce a valid certificate of competence or boat operating licence.
Marine Police confirm the captain is arrested and charged under Section 150 of the Thai Maritime Navigation Act for operating a vessel without proper documentation.
“The safety of tourists and crew is our highest priority. Operators must comply with licensing requirements to prevent incidents that could have far more serious consequences,” officials state.
Phuket authorities urge strict safety compliance
Following the incident, authorities remind all boat operators in Phuket—especially those running tours and water activities—to ensure both vessels and captains are fully licensed and meet safety standards before departure.
The tourist, whose nationality remains unconfirmed, is later seen thanking police and rescue personnel for their quick response.
