Incoming PM refutes false reports
Thailand’s prime minister-designate Anutin Charnvirakul clarified on Friday that reports of an imminent border reopening with Cambodia are premature. Contrary to earlier media claims, no final decision has been made.
“The Defence Ministry has not issued any definitive statement,” Anutin said, stressing that the safety and welfare of Thai citizens remain the priority. He noted that further discussions are required before any action can be taken.
Military voices oppose reopening
Growing opposition from top military figures, including Lt Gen Boonsin Padklang (Commander of the 2nd Army) and Maj Gen Winthai Suvaree (Royal Thai Army spokesperson), has been taken seriously. Both have publicly opposed opening the border at this stage.
Anutin emphasized that official policies cannot yet be enacted under the transitional government.
“Please allow me to officially take office first,” he said, adding that his government will handle the issue only once fully empowered.
Border remains a political minefield
The Cambodia border issue is highly sensitive. Without clear agreements and military backing, reopening is difficult to implement. Anutin indicated he would avoid hasty decisions.
He assured the public that negotiations would begin once his government is formally in office. Until then, all border crossings will remain closed, pending a solution acceptable to both Thailand and Cambodia.
