BANGKOK, Thailand – The Office of National Water Resources (ONWR) has issued a severe flood warning.
Strong Monsoon Pushing Water into River Mouths
A powerful southwest monsoon currently raging over the Andaman Sea, southern Thailand, and the Gulf of Thailand is the cause of the elevated threat. This weather phenomenon is driving significant water level increases at river mouths across the affected regions.
The ONWR has specifically warned of high tide levels that will cause seawater to rise substantially at the mouths of the Chao Phraya, Mae Klong, and Tha Chin rivers. Low-lying areas are expected to be particularly vulnerable to these rising waters.
Seven Provinces and Three Major Roads in Danger Zone
Authorities predict that several rivers will breach their banks. The situation is considered especially critical for communities situated within floodplains or lacking permanent flood protection structures.
Ultimately, seven provinces and three major roadways have been identified as being within the danger zone. The ONWR has not yet disclosed the specific names of these affected provinces or roads.
Authorities Call for Heightened Vigilance
The ONWR has urged all relevant authorities and the general public to closely monitor the developing flood conditions. The critical phase is expected to commence on Monday, June 15, 2026, and continue through Thursday, June 18, 2026.
The combined effects of high tides and the intense monsoon could lead to rapid local flooding. Potential inundation is anticipated especially in low-lying areas along the Chao Phraya, Mae Klong, and Tha Chin rivers, as well as in communities without adequate flood defenses.
