BANGKOK, Thailand – Two Nigerians and a Thai woman were arrested on Friday, June 13, in a coordinated operation, believed to be part of an international drug ring that used sophisticated methods of recruiting new couriers through false online romance promises.

Police simultaneously searched several locations in Bangkok and Samut Prakan. During these searches, officers seized heroin and cocaine with an estimated street value of over 25 million Baht. This significant bust was the culmination of a months-long investigation.
The operation was carried out by the Central Investigation Bureau (CIB) and the Crime Suppression Division (CSD). Investigators had been tracking the network following extensive surveillance.

According to police findings, the masterminds created fake profiles on dating apps and Facebook. Using images of attractive foreigners, they posed as businessmen, engineers, or military personnel to gain the trust of Thai women. Once the women became emotionally dependent, they were moved from public platforms to WhatsApp.
It was on these private channels that the crucial proposition was made: a lucrative courier job involving the simple task of transporting a package across the border. This method preyed on vulnerable individuals seeking connection and a better life.

This is precisely what happened to 23-year-old Lalita. She met a man named “Mc General” on Facebook in mid-2025. Shortly thereafter, the man she believed to be her dream partner sent her to a neighboring country to pick up goods. For each of the three trips, the Thai woman allegedly received between 40,000 and 50,000 Baht. The smuggling itself utilized natural border crossings in Nong Khai, with long-tail boats being employed for transport.

The trap closed when Lalita returned to Bangkok with a suitcase full of narcotics. She checked into a hotel in Ramkhamhaeng, unaware that the police were already monitoring her every move. Officers observed the deliveries of narcotics to the two Nigerian recipients before making their move.
Emeka, aged 39, was intercepted at a toll station on Motorway 9 in Samut Prakan. His 45-year-old accomplice, Anayo, was apprehended in Ramkhamhaeng Soi 24.

During questioning, the three individuals displayed markedly different levels of willingness to cooperate. According to the police, Lalita admitted to transporting heroin and cocaine on three separate occasions. She detailed the procedures of her three journeys.
Anayo also confessed to receiving the cocaine, stating it was already prepared for street sales. In contrast, Emeka broadly denied all accusations leveled against him.

While investigators continue to search for the remaining individuals involved, the CIB is warning the public about this insidious tactic. The method of turning infatuated victims into drug couriers is described as deceptive and difficult to detect.
The lead investigators strongly advise caution with online flirtations that escalate unusually quickly and involve suspicious travel plans. Proceedings against the trio are currently being prepared.
