CHIANG MAI, Thailand – A shocking hunting accident has devastated a remote mountain village. A 65-year-old man, mistaking his neighbor for a wild boar, fired a fatal shot that ended the life of his 56-year-old neighbor.

The deceased, identified as Banthoeng (56), instinctively reacted to what he believed was an approaching wild boar. The shooter, Insorn (65), was positioned on a self-built hunting platform and fired when he saw movement in the tall grass, a tragic instinct.
The shot struck the 56-year-old with full force. He collapsed instantly, his final cry silenced by the dense green of the forest.

Insorn had been occupying the wooded area near Huai Pang Noi since June 22, aware that wild boars were drawn to the area by forest fruits. His elevated platform in a tree was intended to provide him with a crucial vantage point.
However, the undergrowth in the region is so dense that an adult can disappear completely within it. This height contributed to the fatal misidentification during the hunt.

From his perch, Insorn could only see the waving stalks of grass and a movement he associated with a strong wild boar. The sound and speed of the movement fit his mental image of imminent prey.
It was only when he descended the tree and investigated that he discovered his neighbor, fatally wounded amidst the trees. A single shot had led to a mistaken identity that has traumatized the village.

Insorn immediately alerted relatives and the village headman, Chatree Suphatip. A distress call was received by rescue services at 8:30 PM, but the body was located deep within the difficult-to-access mountain forest.
The nearest village was ten kilometers away, followed by a twelve-kilometer uphill trek. Police officers, a doctor, rescue teams, and local residents carried the deceased throughout the night.

The procession reached a navigable point only at 7:00 AM on June 25. Banthoeng’s body was promptly transferred to investigators and forensic medical examiners at the Long Khot Police Station.
The elaborate operation took over eleven hours. The village headman coordinated the helpers while the police are now reconstructing the exact circumstances of the incident.
