Couple killed in Nonthaburi crash

Car hit traffic island, trailer truck and parked van on Chaiyaphruek Road

NONTHABURI, THAILAND – A serious road accident in Nonthaburi claimed two lives and left key questions about the final moments before impact.

Sequence of the crash

On 28 March at around 10:15 p.m., a Honda Civic was reported to have lost control on Chaiyaphruek Road and driven over a traffic island. The car then moved into another lane and only came to a stop after another collision.

After crossing the island, the vehicle crashed into a 20-wheel trailer. Both occupants suffered fatal injuries in the impact, and emergency assistance came too late. Police continued to investigate the precise sequence of events and secured relevant evidence at the scene.

Victims identified

The victims were identified as a married couple aged 28 and 27. According to rescue workers, both were inside the badly damaged car, which was heavily deformed after the collision.

Rescue teams found the two still in the vehicle but could only confirm their deaths. Necessary procedures were then initiated at the site, while the accident area was secured and prepared for forensic documentation.

Other vehicles involved

A white Toyota Alphard van was also involved in the accident and sustained damage. According to initial findings, the van had been parked at the roadside and was hit by the force of the impact when the Civic left its lane.

After the first collision, the van was struck either by flying debris or directly in a secondary impact. Investigators were still checking whether additional damage or any further injuries occurred and recorded the exact extent of the losses at the scene.

Witness statements

A 21-year-old witness stated that he had seen the crash from some distance away. According to his account, the Civic first drove over the traffic island and then hit the trailer and the van parked at the roadside one after another.

The statement was to be compared with other traces and possible video recordings. Investigators aimed to clarify whether driver error, a technical fault or other factors might have contributed to the accident.

Police investigation

Police interviewed those involved at the scene to reconstruct the course of the crash as precisely as possible. They also secured immediate physical evidence so that the collision could later be analysed in detail and its cause narrowed down.

In addition, surveillance cameras in the surrounding area were to be reviewed to help determine the cause. Officers said they would examine not only the vehicle’s path but also external factors such as traffic conditions, visibility and the behaviour of other road users.

Context

The accident underlined once again the importance of vigilance and clear road layouts on heavily used routes. Better protection of traffic islands, stricter controls and adjusted speeds could help prevent similar incidents in future.

The report raised the question of which measures could most effectively improve safety at such locations, including possible structural changes, additional road markings or increased enforcement by the responsible authorities.
