Boy Dies in Temple Electrical Accident

Nakhon Si Thammarat school camp ends in tragedy with multiple injuries following electrocution.

NAKHON SI THAMMARAT, Thailand – A tragic electrical accident has claimed the life of a 14-year-old boy during a school camp in a temple.

Horror after the tragic morning at the temple

What began as a reflective school camp ended in catastrophe. The 14-year-old, Norathep Thaisuwan, known affectionately as “Bright,” was showering in the temple’s bathroom early in the morning. Suddenly, electricity flowed through the water, causing the eighth-grader to collapse. He could not be saved.

Eight other children sustained minor injuries, and one student remains hospitalized for treatment at Somdet Phra Yupharat Chawang Hospital. The incident has sent shockwaves through the community.

School closes gates – parents collect children

Late into the previous night, officials canceled the camp. All participating students were collected by their parents, and the school remained closed as scheduled the following day.

School administration immediately traveled to the scene to organize support for the affected families. The temple where the accident occurred is also contributing to aid efforts and is expediting compensation payments.

Police investigating negligent homicide

Police Colonel Pongpichan Chayanonpiriya, head of the Thung Yai police station, confirmed that an investigation into suspected negligent homicide is underway. Officers are questioning the supervising teachers, temple representatives, and those responsible for the electrical installations.

Forensic teams have examined the accident site and are cooperating closely with the electricity authority. An expert report aims to clarify whether craftsmanship errors or a lack of maintenance led to the electrical leak.

Bare wire found on scaffolding

Police discovered a location where an electrical cable had direct contact with a steel scaffolding. It is believed that the electricity leaked from this point, spreading rapidly in the wet area.

“Since the deceased and the injured were wet, the electricity could flow faster,” the police chief explained.

Investigators are also examining indications that the youths were playing with water in the bathroom prior to the incident.

Cause investigation: experts needed

However, before definitive conclusions can be drawn, electrical engineering specialists must reconstruct the precise sequence of events. The questioning of the injured children is being conducted through a special procedure to ensure their statements are legally sound.

Should the suspicion of negligence be substantiated, those responsible could face charges with severe consequences. Investigators emphasize that no premature blame is being assigned.

Body to be transferred for funeral rites

In the afternoon of the same day, Bright’s body was scheduled to be transferred from Maharaj Nakhon Si Thammarat Hospital to Wat Samrong in the Thung Song district. Teachers and participants are preparing the funeral ceremonies there.

The village community is in shock. Schoolmates, teachers, and relatives are bidding farewell to a boy who was taken from life far too soon.
