BANGKOK, THAILAND – Two shallow earthquakes just across Thailand’s northern borders in Myanmar and Laos prompted intensified monitoring but caused no reported damage.
Shallow 2.7 quake in Myanmar near Mae Hong Son
In the early hours of 6 December 2025, a quake with a magnitude of 2.7 on the Richter scale was recorded in Myanmar at 01:41 a.m. The epicentre lay about 184 kilometres northwest of the Pang Mapha district in Mae Hong Son province, according to Thailand’s seismology division. With a focal depth of only 10 kilometres, it was classified as a shallow earthquake, where vibrations are often felt more clearly at the surface.
Second tremor in Laos closer to Nan
At 02:50 a.m., just under an hour later, a second quake struck in Laos with a magnitude of 2.3. This epicentre was around 132 kilometres northeast of Ban Nam Chang in Nan province, again at a depth of 10 kilometres. Residents in Thailand’s northern border provinces were urged to follow developments closely.
Cluster of quakes alarms seismologists
Although the magnitudes were assessed as moderate to low, seismologists viewed the combination and clustering of two shallow quakes in close succession as noteworthy. The events indicated activated tensions along geological fault lines in the region. Thailand’s earthquake monitoring intensified its observation of the northern border areas amid concerns about possible aftershocks or further activity.
No immediate danger, but ongoing risk
Experts signalled that there was no immediate threat to public safety, noting that tremors of this strength generally did not cause significant damage. At the same time, the incidents underlined that northern Thailand lies in a seismically active zone, with the border region with Myanmar considered particularly vulnerable. They also highlighted the importance of a reliable early warning system and earthquake-resistant construction in the country.
Authorities report no damage in Thailand
The Earthquake Monitoring Division of the Thai Meteorological Department (TMD) issued a detailed report shortly after the events. No damage or injuries were reported on Thai territory, and monitoring stations continued to operate at full capacity. For residents in Mae Hong Son and Nan, the guidance remained to stay calm but alert, as seismic activity in their region persisted as a reality.
