PHUKET, THAILAND – Authorities on the resort island prepared extensive traffic and security measures ahead of the Electric Daisy Carnival 2026, expecting up to 200,000 visitors per day.
Three-day festival in new Rhythm Park
From 16 to 18 January 2026, the new Rhythm Park in Cherng Talay was set to be transformed into a sprawling party zone. Governor Nirat Phongsitthaworn convened a crisis meeting to coordinate preparations.
“We must carefully weigh all operational details,”
said Nirat Phongsitthaworn, governor.
The stated goals were smooth operations, economic benefits and the protection of the island’s international reputation. The festival was regarded as a key driver for the tourism and service sector during the low season.
Shuttle hubs to ease traffic pressure
The biggest concern identified by officials was road congestion, with up to 200,000 people expected to travel daily to the venue on Baan Don Road. As a core measure, six central collection points were planned across the island, from which shuttle buses would take visitors to the festival grounds. Special traffic routes and diversions were to be announced in advance, building on experience from 2025, when 102 traffic police officers had already been deployed continuously.
Security tightened after two tourist deaths
Authorities also focused on safety in light of previous incidents. During EDC 2025, two foreign tourists – a 32-year-old American and a 28-year-old Canadian – collapsed unconscious on the festival site and later died in hospital. Police issued no official explanation for the causes of death.
For 2026, security arrangements were to be strengthened further. In 2025, the operation had already involved 250 police officers, 300 security staff and a bomb disposal team on duty throughout the event.
Noise, sanitation and waste challenge communities
Beyond security, environmental impacts formed another major area of planning. Authorities highlighted the need to manage noise levels, provide sufficient toilets and organise waste disposal for hundreds of thousands of attendees. The governor called for a systematic evaluation of all measures to prepare Phuket for future mega-events.
Local economy to share in benefits
Officials also aimed to include local artists and entrepreneurs so that surrounding communities would see tangible economic gains. The festival was positioned as a showcase to present Phuket as a world-class event destination. At the same time, planners acknowledged that existing roads were already overloaded under normal traffic conditions.
Stress test for island infrastructure
Questions remained over whether the island’s infrastructure could withstand the anticipated crowds. Officials warned that a single accident or heavy downpour could cause the entire traffic concept to collapse, making robust contingency plans essential. Fire services and emergency rescue units were instructed to be prepared for all scenarios, as January was expected to serve as a critical test for the whole island.
