Truck driver Sopak Honsoda insists faulty brakes are to blame. Police confirmed the technical fault—yet he’s now been charged regardless.
Driver Under Fire Despite Brake Failure
Lieutenant Chonlathit isn’t letting Sopak off the hook. He’s accused the driver of ‘reckless driving causing injuries and damage’.
The officer explained, ‘Truckers have strict rules—you must check your vehicle before you drive. Skipping this step is reckless.’
Lucky Escape—Three Hurt But No Fatalities
It could have ended much worse. Only three people suffered minor injuries like scrapes and chest pains.
All were taken to hospital but discharged that day. Around 15 in total were caught up in the frightening ordeal.
Employer Steps Up For Victims
Police say Sopak’s employer has accepted civil liability. The company promises to cover repair bills, lost use, and any compensation.
‘We’ve been contacted by the company. They’ll take responsibility, and all victims are being updated,’ adds Lieutenant Chonlathit.
Tunnel Closures and Major Repairs
The Darasamut Underpass will shut completely from Saturday night to Sunday morning. Urgent works are planned.
Phuket’s Highways Office warned that barriers and other safety measures will be fixed. Drivers will face long detours.
Talks Over Compensation Loom
All parties are due to meet on September 30. Police, victims, and the company hope to strike a final compensation deal.
If talks collapse, victims may still take their claim to court. Nothing is ruled out.

Lieutenant Chonlathit’s message is clear. Even if a mechanical fault is real, skipping basic checks can bring criminal charges.
