Bangkok, Thailand – The Meteorological Department has warned of unstable weather in 20 high-risk provinces. From May 7 to 10, several regions will experience more thunderstorms, strong gusts, and locally heavy rain, including Bangkok and its vicinity. A cooling of the air is expected afterward.
Thunderstorm front hits multiple regions
According to the Meteorological Department’s warning, the weather situation affects the northern, northeastern, eastern, and central regions of the country. In Bangkok and surrounding areas, more thunderstorms with strong wind gusts and localized heavy rain are also expected.
The south will become more unsettled: easterly winds over the region and the Gulf of Thailand may intensify, causing local heavy rain. The authority names 20 high-risk provinces in its bulletin.
Chinese air mass and moist winds as triggers
The Meteorological Department cites a high-pressure system or cold air mass from China spreading over the northeastern region and the South China Sea. Additionally, southerly and southeasterly winds bring moisture from the Gulf of Thailand and the South China Sea to upper Thailand.
The result: weather remains unstable with thunderstorms, wind gusts, and heavy rain in some areas. After May 10, the air is expected to cool again.
Warning of flash floods and damage
People in affected areas should take precautions against thunderstorms and strong winds, and avoid staying outdoors, under large trees, buildings, or weak billboards. The authority also warns of heavy and accumulated rain that can trigger flash floods and inundations.
Farmers should secure fruit trees and prepare for possible damage to crops. Agriculture and livestock should be especially protected during the weather change.
