BANGKOK, THAILAND – Thailand announced it was fully prepared to host the 33rd SEA Games from 9 to 20 December, positioning itself as the sporting hub of Southeast Asia.
Thailand confirms readiness for 33rd SEA Games
The Tourism and Sports Ministry said all preparations for the regional multi-sport event had been completed. Athletes were expected to compete in 50 sports for a total of 574 gold medals. In addition, three demonstration sports and one values-based sport were on the programme.
Bangkok and Chonburi set for major competition
The Games were scheduled to take place in Bangkok and Chonburi, with organisers promising spectacular competitions across venues.
“We were absolutely ready to welcome Southeast Asia’s best athletes,”
said Ayrin Phanrit, deputy government spokesperson. The government said the entire nation was expected to follow and support the event.
K-pop star BamBam to headline opening ceremony
The highlight was set to be the opening ceremony on 9 December at Rajamangala National Stadium. A global star was due to take the stage: BamBam, the Thai member of K-pop group GOT7, was to open the event alongside other Thai artists. Organisers promised a surprise performance and anticipated an electrifying atmosphere in a packed stadium.
Free entry and online booking for fans
The government announced that entry to the lavish opening ceremony would be free of charge, inviting the public to attend in person. Free tickets could be booked via the official website www.seagames2025.org or the Line channel @SEAGAMES.
“We encouraged all Thais to take part as good hosts, to cheer and to support our athletes,”
said the government spokesperson, adding that demand for tickets would be strong.
Central information channels for spectators
To keep the public informed, organisers set up central information platforms, with www.seagames2025.org as the main contact point. The Facebook page SEA Games Thailand 2025 was to provide daily updates, highlights and background stories on the athletes. Schedules, results and traffic information were to be bundled there to ensure transparency and maximise participation.
Festival of unity for Southeast Asia
Officials framed the SEA Games as more than a sporting event, describing them as a festival of unity and peaceful competition for Southeast Asia. Thailand aimed to present itself as an organised, hospitable and passionate host, using the Games to strengthen national cohesion. For athletes, the event was portrayed as a chance to shine at home after years of hard training and to write sporting history.
National hopes pinned on home athletes
Focus was placed on Thai competitors, with the public urged to cheer as the country’s best athletes pursued medals. Hopes were high across disciplines from athletics and swimming to traditional sports, ahead of a closing ceremony on 20 December to celebrate the results. With venues prepared, athletes in top form and fans invited, authorities said the stage was set for the country’s biggest sporting festival of the year.
