BANGKOK, Thailand – Teenage golf prodigy Pannawit Wangjaisuk secured the Thailand Junior World Tour crown on Sunday, earning a ticket to compete in Japan. With steely nerves, the teenager not only claimed the annual points title but also emerged victorious in a dramatic playoff, punching his ticket for the international competition.
The Final Without A Safety Net
The season finale at Phoenix Gold Golf Bangkok demanded everything from the junior players. The competition was played in a gross score format; handicaps were irrelevant, with pure skill on the green being the deciding factor.
And TJ, as he is known, delivered. With a round of 73 strokes, a tied third place in the overall standings, and a hefty 385 season points, he clinched the title in the E-Boy division.
A Nerve-Wracking Playoff
But the drama wasn’t over. Because TJ and an opponent were tied for third place on points, a sudden-death playoff on the Par-5 ninth hole was required to determine participation in the Golf Digest Japan Junior Cup. The pressure was immense, as only the winner would secure the final spot on the Thai team.
TJ’s caddie was his father, Piyapong Wangjaisuk. Before the crucial second shot, the young golfer made a bold decision, opting for a three-wood and announcing his intention to hit the green directly – a risky but perfectly executed strategy.
The Decisive Chip
After both players remained tied with birdies, a 20-yard chip-off was needed for the final decision. It was a short showdown demanding supreme precision and a cool head.
TJ proved to have the stronger nerves, placing his ball closer to the pin than his rival and securing the victory.
“The playoff was quite stressful, but I tried to focus on one shot at a time and stick to the game plan we had worked out,”
he said after his triumph.
A Father Sees More Than the Victory
Father Piyapong was not solely proud of the result. His entire focus was on his son’s development throughout the season: discipline, emotional control, and smart decisions under extreme pressure.
“Today, my son showed great composure and self-confidence,”
the proud father stated, further underscoring the significance of the moment.
Coach Praises Bold Strategy
Coach Tichalada Nithitirasakun, known as “Pro Nam,” lauded her student’s mental fortitude. Specifically, she praised the aggressive strategy of aiming for the green with the three-wood as a demonstration of true courage and technical skill.
For her, this shot reflected the significant growth TJ has experienced, not only in his game but, crucially, in his mental maturity.
A Wolf on the Way to Japan
The E-Boy division title is not TJ’s first masterstroke. He previously won the annual points championship in the F-Division in 2025, dominating two different classes in consecutive years. From August 3rd to 7th, he will now represent Thailand at the Golf Digest Japan Junior Cup. For this Young Wolf, it marks the next significant step on a career ladder that is just beginning.
