Thailand’s sky-high ambition
Thailand has confirmed its most ambitious military purchase in decades – the Airbus A330 Multi Role Tanker Transport Plus (MRTT+). The Royal Thai Air Force (RTAF) struck a multi-billion deal with Airbus to deliver the cutting-edge jet by 2029, a move described as a dramatic leap in regional air power.
Airbus executive Jean-Brice Dumont celebrated the deal, saying: ‘Thailand’s choice underlines the trust placed in this platform.’ The MRTT+ is no ordinary transport aircraft; it combines refuelling, VIP cabin facilities and advanced medical evacuation capabilities in one high-tech package.
From Toulouse to Thailand
The transformation begins in 2026, when the A330neo-based jet will undergo military modifications at Airbus’s MRTT Centre in Getafe, Spain. Fitted with Rolls-Royce Trent 7000 engines, redesigned wing tips and lighter aerodynamics, the aircraft promises not only more power but an 8 per cent cut in fuel burn and noise.
By 2029, Thailand will take delivery of its first MRTT+, complete with training programmes to ensure its crews master the most advanced aviation technologies on offer.
A strategic boost to defence
With a maximum take-off weight of 242 tonnes – up from 233 tonnes in earlier models – the A330 MRTT+ delivers unprecedented range and flexibility. Its hose-and-drogue and boom refuelling systems allow it to support a wider range of aircraft, while its medevac kits offer lifesaving capacity in emergencies.
For Thailand, the strategic benefits are clear: sharper airspace surveillance, rapid humanitarian response in disasters, reliable medical evacuation and the capability to contribute to international operations.
‘Make in Thailand’ partnership
The deal also includes a major local dimension. Airbus signed an agreement with Thai Aviation Industries (TAI) to base maintenance and support inside Thailand. Dumont said: ‘Through our partnership with TAI we are transferring skills, know-how and technology.’
The move is designed to strengthen Thailand’s own high-tech sector, build jobs and enhance the country’s reputation as a rising aviation hub.
A global bestseller
Thailand joins 11 other nations – including France, Australia, South Korea and NATO – that already operate or have ordered the A330 MRTT. With 85 units sold worldwide and a market share of over 90 per cent outside the United States, the model has become Airbus’s flagship military aircraft.
For the RTAF, the order is more than procurement; it is a statement of intent to become Southeast Asia’s leading air force.
Helicopter power for rescue
Alongside the superjet, Thailand has also ordered two new Airbus H225 helicopters. Known for their role in search, rescue and evacuation, more than 360 H225s are in service worldwide, logging almost one million flight hours.
Air Chief Marshal Punpakdee Pattanakul declared: ‘The new helicopters strengthen our ability to protect the Thai people.’
Looking to the skies
Whether it is the all-purpose MRTT+ or the heavy-duty H225, the message is the same: Thailand is investing in sovereignty, security and modernisation. Rivals in the region may look on with envy, but for Thailand the future of the skies is firmly Airbus-powered.
