Staged evidence revealed on the frontier
The simmering tension between Thailand and Cambodia flared dramatically on 27 September, when the Thai Second Army Region Command accused Cambodian troops of orchestrating a staged incident along the disputed border at Chong Arn Ma.
According to Thai military reports, Cambodian soldiers were caught on video deliberately positioning cameras before opening fire with machine guns and grenade launchers towards Thai territory. Officials claim the footage proves a calculated attempt to create ‘evidence’ of conflict ahead of a visit by international observers.

The images, leaked to Thai media, show soldiers setting up a fixed camera. Moments later, the sound of gunfire echoes – unmistakably from the Cambodian side. For Thai commanders, the sequence suggests not spontaneous clashes but a staged performance designed to frame Thailand as the aggressor.
The revelation comes just before a scheduled inspection by the International Observer Team (IOT). Cambodia had notified Thai authorities at 1pm of the same-day visit, a timeline Thai officers described as suspiciously convenient.
A trap to provoke escalation?
Military analysts in Thailand say the strategy is clear: lure Thai troops into responding, then present selective footage to the IOT as proof of Cambodian victimhood. Colonel-level sources called it a ‘deliberate trap aimed at escalation’.
The Thai army insists its forces remained disciplined and did not retaliate, despite live fire. By resisting provocation, Bangkok hopes to maintain credibility in the eyes of the international community and avoid fuelling Cambodia’s narrative.
From video to press release
Adding to suspicions, the Cambodian Ministry of Defence released a press statement only minutes after the incident. Almost immediately afterwards, the IOT delegation was ushered into the contested zone to inspect the ‘evidence’.
Observers now question whether the sequence of events – camera set-up, gunfire, press release, observer tour – was carefully choreographed to maximise diplomatic pressure on Thailand.
Thai troops on high alert
The Suranaree Command, responsible for security in the area, has placed its soldiers on heightened alert. The official order is strict: do not fire unless absolutely necessary, but be ready for escalation at any moment.
For Thai troops in the field, the restraint is as frustrating as it is necessary. One officer admitted privately that ‘the pressure is immense, but the cost of reacting would be far higher’.
