BANGKOK, THAILAND – Thailand’s Prime Minister has assured the public that life will largely go on as normal during a nationwide 15-day mourning period following the death of Princess Bajrakitiyabha. In a special cabinet session, Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul clarified that daily activities and public events can proceed, though with designated moments of respect. Concerts, sports, and entertainment are permitted but must now commence with a minute of silence.
Minute of Silence Before Crisis Meeting
The cabinet meeting at the Government House began with a gesture of silent commemoration. Prime Minister Anutin led the assembled ministers in a minute of silence for the King’s eldest daughter.
The session’s focus then shifted to coordinating royal mourning ceremonies and providing clear guidance to the public. Relevant authorities were instructed to ensure logistical support for the multi-day ceremonies.
Everyday Life Continues Despite Mourning
Anutin eased the public’s primary concerns during the session. He stated that planned concerts, sporting events, and conferences do not need to be canceled during the mourning phase.
However, a dignified setting is becoming mandatory. Following guidelines from the Royal Household Bureau, every public event should begin with a collective minute of silence as a sign of respect.
Half-Mast Flags and Strict Travel Rules for Ministers
The cabinet immediately ordered all government agencies and state enterprises to fly flags at half-mast. Simultaneously, a 15-day mourning period took effect.
Stricter guidelines now apply to government members. Anutin instructed his ministers to focus on essential tasks and keep international travel as brief as possible. However, already scheduled international high-level meetings will proceed as planned.
Coffin Procession Through the Heart of Bangkok
The transfer of the royal coffin is scheduled for June 13th. The funeral procession will depart at 3:30 PM from Gate 15 of Chulalongkorn Hospital.
The route will proceed via Henri Dunant Road, Rama IV Road, and Phaya Thai Road, continuing through the three Ratchadamnoen sections. Passing Sanam Luang, the convoy will eventually reach the Phiman Rattaya Throne Hall within the Grand Palace.
Public Homage Before a Portrait
The public will have an opportunity for personal tribute on June 13th between 8:30 AM and 12:00 PM. Mourners can offer water for the royal remains before the Princess’s portrait in the Sahathai Samakhom Hall at the Grand Palace.
The ceremony will be personally led by Prime Minister Anutin. He will perform the first water offerings along with the entire cabinet.
