NAKHON RATCHASIMA, THAILAND – A 67-year-old municipal councillor in northeast Thailand confessed to an armed robbery attempt on a gold shop after being tracked home by police.
Daylight robbery attempt in Korat gold shop
On 24 January around midday, a man entered the Phanthong Yaowarat Gold Shop in Korat posing as an ordinary customer. Under a helmet and dark clothing, he hid his identity as Wichian Sirisathit, a member of the Pho Klang city council. He drew a 9mm pistol and demanded gold, telling staff,
“I only want the gold, I do not want to hurt anyone.”
said Wichian, according to the account given to police.
Saleswoman’s quick alarm foils the plan
Shop assistant Namfon Jianmaroeng, 34, stayed calm and spoke to the robber to gain time. She secretly pressed the emergency alarm while continuing to engage him. The attacker fired a warning shot, then fled empty-handed on his motorcycle.
Police trace escape route through market
A large contingent of city, regional and provincial police followed the escape route through a market and over a wall. About 800 meters from the crime scene, officers found a suspicious motorcycle in a residential area. It was parked in front of the home of 67-year-old Wichian, immediately putting the local councillor under suspicion.
Phone data and CCTV link councillor to crime
Checks on his mobile phone provided the breakthrough for investigators. The phone location data placed him at the gold shop at the exact time of the robbery and along the escape route. The records matched the images captured by the shop’s surveillance cameras.
Confession and claim of heavy debts
Under the weight of the evidence, the politician did not hold out. He admitted the attempted robbery and the shot fired with his Norinco 213 pistol. As his motive, he cited
“serious debts.”
said Wichian, according to investigators.
Fall from office and legal consequences
Investigators viewed his public office and the trust attached to it as making the act particularly reprehensible. Police immediately initiated all necessary legal steps against the former councillor. The failed robbery abruptly ended the career of the local politician.

The clear heroine of the incident was saleswoman Namfon Jianmaroeng. Her composure and courage in triggering the alarm prevented a potential theft worth millions and possibly worse consequences. Gold shops in Thailand had repeatedly been targets of robberies, but it was rare for perpetrators to come from the ranks of local politics.
