TRAT, THAILAND – Tension mounted along the Thai-Cambodian border after Cambodian troops dug extensive trenches and carried out drone flights close to Thai positions.
Parallel trenches deepen frontier standoff
A high-ranking naval source confirmed that Cambodian engineers had excavated trenches for more than one kilometre near Ban Sam Lang in Trat province, just 500 metres from Thai positions. The works stretched across the areas of Ban Tha Sen, Ban Nong Ree and Ban Chamrak. The move was described as a “face-off deployment”, a formation in which opposing troops lined up directly facing each other, with the new trenches running parallel to Thai lines.
Cambodian build-up versus Thai advantage
According to the source, Cambodia had apparently expanded its fortifications systematically since a ceasefire. Thai troops were said to retain a tactically advantageous position despite the new construction. The source stressed that the Cambodian activities were taking place on their own territory but that the psychological impact on Thai soldiers was significant.
Drone overflights trigger formal protest
Even more sensitive than the digging were developments in the air, where Thai authorities reported spotting Cambodian drones conducting reconnaissance flights over Thai positions. The informant cautioned that it was too early to say whether the tensions would evolve into a new open confrontation, noting that the terrain in the border area was extremely sensitive and difficult to control. Thai armed forces remained on high alert and closely monitored every movement on the other side. Memories of previous clashes around the Preah Vihear Temple were still fresh, and any careless action or misunderstanding could shatter the fragile balance.
