Tech-Fuelled Export Boom Lifts Thailand

Record 2025 shipments pass 11 trillion baht as AI demand surges

BANGKOK, THAILAND – Thailand’s exports surged to a record high in 2025, crossing the 11 trillion baht mark on the back of a global high-tech and AI boom.

Record exports and historic growth

The Office of Trade Policy and Strategy (TPSO) reported historic export growth of 12.9 percent, with shipments rising to 339.64 billion US dollars. In local currency, exports amounted to about 11.14 trillion baht, a level never reached before, while imports also grew 12.9 percent, leaving a trade deficit of 5.31 billion dollars. December extended the rally as the 18th consecutive month of export expansion, with a 16.8 percent jump to 28.93 billion dollars.

AI and electronics power high-tech surge

The main driver of the expansion was clearly the technology sector, as global AI upgrades and demand for electronics kept Thai factories busy.

“Electronics and electrical appliances were the biggest drivers,”

said TPSO, which highlighted Thailand’s strong role as a production base for semiconductors, computer parts and smart devices. High-tech products have increasingly displaced traditional goods as the country’s leading export earners.

Agriculture struggles amid disasters and competition

While industry boomed, the agricultural sector remained in crisis, with exports of farm products continuing to decline. Severe natural disasters such as droughts and floods, along with intensifying global competition, hit key products including rice, rubber and tropical fruits. Dependence on weather conditions and volatile world market prices has become an existential challenge for Thai farmers.

Outlook for 2026: Slower pace and mounting risks

The Ministry of Commerce viewed the new year with mixed feelings, expecting the explosive growth of nearly 13 percent to slow. Potential US punitive tariffs, rising geopolitical tensions and a possibly stronger baht were seen as serious risks, as a more expensive currency could make Thai goods less attractive abroad. At the same time, sustained demand for AI-related products and the global focus on food security were identified as important sources of support.

Government strategy to stay competitive

The government’s strategy focused on new free trade agreements and tapping into rapidly growing markets in Asia and Africa. TPSO aimed to further reduce trade barriers and prepare Thai exporters to be future-ready in international competition. The record performance of 2025 was described as a strong foundation, but officials stressed the need to maintain the high-tech edge while stabilising traditional sectors in an increasingly challenging global trade environment.
