BANGKOK, THAILAND – Russia’s embassy in Bangkok rejected reports that Russian mercenaries were involved in the Thailand-Cambodia border conflict.
Embassy rejects reports of Russian mercenaries
The Russian Embassy in Thailand firmly denied media claims that Russian mercenaries had been deployed in the border dispute between Thailand and Cambodia. In a statement published on 15 December 2025 on its Facebook page, the mission issued a clear rebuttal to allegations circulating in Thai media.
“These reports are unfounded.”
said the embassy in its official declaration. Diplomats described the coverage as false information aimed at undermining the rights of Russian nationals in Thailand, including tourists and businesspeople who were staying in the country legally.
Moscow warns of targeted disinformation
The embassy viewed the reports as a deliberate attack on the long-standing friendship between Russia and Thailand. It warned of external sources that were allegedly spreading these unsubstantiated claims.
Russian citizens in Thailand were coming under pressure as a result of what the mission called a disinformation campaign. The embassy stressed that all Russian nationals in the country were present as lawful visitors or businesspeople, and a spokesperson said it would take all necessary steps to protect the interests of its citizens.
Foreign ministry urges peaceful settlement
The Russian Foreign Ministry had already taken a clear stance on the Thailand-Cambodia conflict on 11 December 2025. During a press conference, a ministry spokesperson called on all parties to resolve the dispute by peaceful means.
Moscow maintained friendly relations with both sides in the conflict and said it intended to preserve them. The Russian government rejected any form of military escalation and stated it relied solely on diplomatic negotiations, presenting itself as a neutral actor in the region.
Bilateral ties seen at risk from false reports
According to the embassy, Russian-Thai relations were under attack from targeted disinformation. The diplomatic mission warned of forces seeking to damage trust between the two countries.
Decades of partnership between Moscow and Bangkok were described as being threatened by the unproven accusations. The embassy appealed to Thai media to research more carefully and not to rely on unverified sources, arguing that fact-based reporting was crucial for bilateral relations.
Russia offers to mediate between Thailand and Cambodia
Reiterating its neutral position in the Thailand-Cambodia border dispute, the Foreign Ministry said Moscow maintained intensive economic and security partnerships with both Southeast Asian states and did not want to endanger them.
The Russian government offered itself as a mediator in the border conflict.
“Peaceful negotiations are the only path to a lasting solution,”
said a ministry spokesperson, adding that Russia would use its diplomatic channels to bring both sides to the negotiating table.
