KANCHANABURI, THAILAND – Security forces at a border checkpoint intercepted a luxury van and seized 182 kilograms of ketamine worth more than 36 million baht.
Tip-off leads to high-security checkpoint
A confidential tip alerted security forces that a major drug shipment was to be moved from the border area of Kanchanaburi into the interior of the country. On 13 December, special units set up a heavily guarded checkpoint at the Thong Pha Phum three-way junction. Shortly afterwards, a white Toyota Alphard with Bangkok licence plates arrived, matching the description from the tip.

The 39-year-old driver, identified as Methi, appeared extremely nervous when questioned. He claimed he was travelling from Sangkhla Buri to Mueang Kanchanaburi. Officers decided to carry out a thorough search of the vehicle.
Car body rebuilt to hide drugs
Technicians discovered that the van’s bodywork and centre console had been completely rebuilt. Behind inconspicuous panels, they found secret cavities packed with vacuum-sealed packages. The haul totalled 182 kilograms of high-purity ketamine, with an estimated street value of 36.4 million baht.
Coup hailed as major success for investigators
Officials described the seizure as a major success against professional drug networks operating along the border. The modified luxury van was seized along with the drugs as evidence. The driver was taken into custody for further questioning and legal proceedings.
Courier admits working for woman known as ‘Da’
Under the weight of the evidence, the detained courier quickly confessed he had been working for a mysterious woman known only as “Da.” His task was to drive the van from Ban Bo Yipun to Mueang Kanchanaburi for a fee of 5,000 baht. An unidentified person was supposed to take over the vehicle once it reached its destination.
“I knew it was illegal, but I needed the money.”

Senior commanders coordinated the operation
The successful interception was described as the result of meticulous preparation rather than luck. It was led by Major General Natthaphong Asawinwong, commander of the 9th Infantry Division. He was supported by Colonel Phansak Priaophanich and a large contingent of border police, local officials and the Lad-Ya taskforce.
Provincial governor involved in planning
The governor of Kanchanaburi, Warittha Sa-nguansermsri, was also involved in planning the joint operation. Her participation underscored the high priority given to combating drug trafficking in the border region. The arrested driver, the seized ketamine and the van were handed over to local police for legal action and follow-up investigations.
Investigators pursue network behind shipment
Authorities stressed that the arrest of the courier was only the first step. Investigators were now focusing on identifying the woman known as Da and the unknown recipient who was meant to collect the van in Kanchanaburi. They believed they had disrupted an important artery of the international drug trade, and said the case was far from closed.
