BANGKOK, THAILAND – Allegations that Chinese inmates received VIP treatment, including visits from women, shook Thailand’s justice system and triggered a major investigation.
Special investigation into alleged VIP treatment
The Department of Special Investigation (DSI) launched a large-scale probe into reports that Chinese prisoners at Bangkok Remand Prison had secretly received visits from models. Investigators examined claims that sexual encounters took place inside the facility, while the Security Crime Division searched for the network that arranged the women.
“We must establish the full facts,”
said Police Major Yutthana Praedam, DSI chief, on Sunday. He stated that everyone involved would be held accountable.
Raids uncover contraband and security failures
On 16 and 20 November, special units stormed the prison in Lat Yao, with regular guards excluded from the operation. Authorities seized prohibited items including knives, cigarettes, refrigerators, microwaves and air conditioners.
They also found mobile phones and other electronic devices, indicating that conditions inside the facility had slipped completely out of control. Two Chinese inmates were discovered with women in a hidden room and were immediately transferred to the high-security Khao Bin prison.
Prison leadership sidelined and zones under scrutiny
Former prison director Manop Chomchuen was already removed from his position and reassigned to an inactive post. The Immigration Bureau was reviewing his travel records to determine whether he had knowledge of or links to the alleged illegal dealings.
Investigators placed zones 2, 4 and 8 under particular observation, as many Chinese inmates were held there. Zone 8, with more than 900 prisoners, drew special suspicion, partly because it was located next to an old carpentry workshop.
Workshop room suspected as meeting point
The former carpentry room was believed to have served as a meeting point for illegal activities. Authorities were now examining camera footage from the area to confirm who entered and used the space.
At the same time, a committee was reviewing the prison law after it emerged that the abuses had gone unnoticed for years. The case raised questions about oversight mechanisms inside one of Bangkok’s most prominent detention centers.
Money trails and international links
Investigators were checking for ties to international criminal networks behind the alleged privileges and services. According to the DSI, substantial money flows appeared to be linked to the favours granted inside the prison.
Chinese inmates had apparently paid for the special treatment, and the DSI was tracking the financial trails. The agency said it aimed to expose all individuals and groups involved in arranging the VIP conditions.
Public outrage and shaken trust in justice system
The scandal placed Thailand’s justice system under intense public scrutiny, with observers asking how such serious security gaps could have developed. Many citizens were shocked that, while ordinary inmates suffered, wealthier prisoners seemed to enjoy relative luxury behind bars.
The DSI pledged a thorough and transparent investigation, but trust in the prison administration had been deeply damaged. The revelations also prompted broader debate over whether a far-reaching reform of the country’s prison system was needed.
