PHUKET, THAILAND – Tour boat operators have been arrested off the coast of Phuket for allegedly taking Chinese guests out to sea with a mix of missing licenses and illegal high-tech equipment.
Patrol Stops Suspicious Fishing Trip
Authorities received a tip about illegal fishing excursions for foreign tourists operating on the water. On June 22, around 6:45 PM, a patrol team intercepted the described boat near Dinso Cape in Vichit district.
Onboard were two tourists from China and the Thai boat operator. What was intended as a relaxed fishing trip ended with the skipper in handcuffs and an expansion of the investigation.
High-Tech On Board – And No Papers
Upon boarding the vessel, police were surprised to find a complete Starlink satellite internet system installed, including signal receivers, power supply units, and routers.
The arrested operator claimed the expensive equipment belonged to the company that hired him. However, according to the police, he could not provide any import or ownership documents. The entire system was confiscated on site.
License Confusion and Lack of Qualification
However, the illegal internet was only the beginning. During the inspection of the ship’s papers, investigators found further irregularities. The boat’s license did not comply with regulations, and the crew’s qualifications also raised concerns.
As a result, the operator will now face charges under the law governing navigation in Thai waters. Indictments have already been initiated.
Tour Without a Guide
For the Chinese guests, the boat tour also proved to be a disappointment, as they had embarked without a licensed tour guide. This is a clear violation of Thai tourism regulations.
The police have therefore immediately filed a complaint against the responsible tour company. All collected evidence was sent directly to the Ministry of Tourism, which is now reviewing further steps against the firm.
Authorities Suspect Nominee Scheme
Investigators believe the case runs deeper, examining the company’s entire structure and the origin of investments. They suspect nominee business practices, where Thai individuals may only hold company shares on paper to bypass legal restrictions for foreign investors.
The officers emphasized that the raid is part of a comprehensive crackdown on unscrupulous operators in the tourism sector. The aim is to keep the maritime sector clean and protect tourist confidence in the long term.
