PATONG BEACH, PHUKET – Black seawater suddenly appears: A natural plankton bloom is currently causing an eerie spectacle on parts of the famous Patong Beach.
Lab tests have provided reassurances, as the tiny organisms are non-toxic. Nevertheless, experts strongly advise against swimming because contact with the discolored water can irritate the skin.
Black Sea Water Due to Harmless Algae
Bathers could not believe their eyes when the coastline suddenly turned pitch black. The Marine and Coastal Resources Research Center has solved the mystery and clearly rules out direct wastewater discharge as a cause.
A mass proliferation of phytoplankton is responsible for the dark scenery. These microscopic organisms cloud the water, making it appear completely black.
Two Plankton Species Confirmed in Lab Tests
Authorities took water samples and analyzed them in the laboratory. The result: the bloom consists of two types of phytoplankton, Chaetoceros sp. and Peridinium sp., both of which are classified as non-toxic.
There is therefore no danger of poisoning. However, a dip in the black water is not entirely harmless, scientists warn.
Experts Warn of Skin Irritations
Even if the algae are not toxic, they can lead to unpleasant irritations upon direct skin contact. For this reason, experts strongly advise against swimming during the discoloration phase.
Those who avoid the black water are on the safe side. For snorkelers and divers, the advice for now is: keep your distance.
Waves Solve the Problem Naturally
Such plankton blooms are a temporary spectacle. Normally, the sea itself provides the solution, as waves and currents distribute the tiny organisms.
Experts expect the water to clarify completely naturally within three to seven days. Patience and a bit of wind are enough for the phenomenon to disappear on its own.
Municipal Administration Announces Stricter Controls
To curb such blooms in the future, the Patong Municipality is now taking action. Factors unnecessarily accelerating algae growth are to be reduced through targeted controls.
Officials will conduct random inspections of local businesses. The focus of the controllers is primarily on illegal wastewater discharges and the proper functioning of sewage systems.

The Patong Municipality plans close coordination with all relevant authorities. It is believed that only by working together can the situation be effectively monitored and the bay protected in the long term.
