PHUKET, THAILAND – An unregistered cosmetics shop in Phuket Town was found to be an alleged major storage site for smuggled, untaxed e-cigarettes, leading to the arrest of a 21-year-old man.
Tip-off leads officers to hidden vape depot
In response to a strong lead, investigators from Border Police Company 425 and the Narcotics Control Board raided a cosmetics shop on Dilok-Uthit 2 Road in Talat Yai district. The unregistered business appeared to be a regular beauty salon but was allegedly used as a logistics hub for illegal vape products. The only person present, a 21-year-old man, was unable to produce any permits for selling the goods and was immediately arrested.
Large cache of high-capacity e-cigarettes seized
Officers confiscated a broad range of disposable e-cigarettes and refill pods from both well-known and obscure brands. Among them were high-capacity products such as Relx 20,000-puff disposables and Eskobar 20,000-puff disposables, with police securing dozens of devices and more than 70 refill pods. All items had allegedly been smuggled into Thailand without customs clearance or tax payment, in clear violation of several laws.
Multiple charges over sale and import of untaxed products
The suspect faced a catalogue of allegations, including breaching the ban on the sale of e-cigarettes imposed by the consumer protection committee and possession and distribution of untaxed or restricted goods. He was also accused of trading in smuggled merchandise, knowingly dealing in illegally imported products, possessing untaxed tobacco products with intent to sell, and importing tobacco products without authorization.
Profits driven by tax gap and youth demand
Officials stated that a significant tax difference made e-cigarette smuggling into Thailand a billion-baht business, as legal products were subject to high excise taxes. Smugglers like the detained man were able to massively undercut legal prices and make large profits, especially in a market popular with young tourists and local residents. Authorities estimated that much of the vaping products consumed in Thailand entered the country through illegal channels, and said this raid reflected only a small part of a much larger problem.
Health risks from uncontrolled vape liquids
Beyond their illegal status, the seized products were described as posing health risks because their ingredients were not controlled and did not meet Thai quality standards. The nicotine concentration could be irregularly high, and the liquids might contain untested chemicals, turning their purchase into a dangerous gamble for consumers. The police issued a strong warning against buying such goods, stressing that in addition to possible criminal consequences, buyers mainly endangered their own health.
Investigators trace supply chain behind seized goods
The suspect was taken to Phuket City Police Station, where investigators planned to trace the supply chain behind the illegal depot. They aimed to identify major importers and determine whether a wider network of intermediaries was involved, hoping that extensive questioning would lead them higher up the hierarchy. The confiscated products were to be kept as evidence, while the 21-year-old now faced a lengthy legal process with the prospect of heavy fines or even imprisonment.
