BANGKOK, Thailand – A Chinese national, accused of defrauding dozens of people with a daring investment scam, has been apprehended by immigration police in Bangkok. The 28-year-old, identified as Chen Zh, allegedly promised investors dream returns of up to 30 percent through a pet business. After more than 30 individuals fell victim to the scheme and the business closed down, he fled to Thailand. He is now in immigration detention and is slated for repatriation to China.
The Promised Animal Paradise Turned Out to Be a Hoax
According to investigators, Chen operated the “Miao Dun Pet Life Store” in Wuhan. In the upscale Xinli Amber Garden in Hanyang district, he falsely presented to customers the opportunity to invest in the trade of live pets. He reportedly promised investors lucrative returns ranging between 15 and 30 percent. However, authorities clarified that these investors never saw their money. Instead, Chen allegedly simply closed the business.
After Fleeing, China Requested Thai Police Assistance
As early as November 13, 2024, the Hanyang District Public Security Bureau issued an arrest warrant for the 28-year-old on charges of illegal acceptance of public deposits. However, Chen had already disappeared by that time.
The office of China’s Police Attaché in Thailand intervened and officially requested assistance from Thai officials. The objective was to locate and apprehend the fugitive in Bangkok.
Raid on Hotel After Visa Cancellation
Thai immigration officials initially confirmed that Chen had legally entered the country and his residence permit was valid. However, after reviewing the international arrest warrant, they revoked his visa.
Investigators from the immigration bureau eventually tracked Chen down to a hotel in the Sutthiporn area on Prachasongkhro Road in Din Daeng district. He was arrested without resistance. Police Lieutenant General Phanumas Boonyalak and Major General Phanop Worathanatchakul officially announced the arrest on June 12.
Now in Immigration Detention
Following his arrest, Chen was immediately transferred to the third investigation division of the immigration bureau. He will remain there until all repatriation formalities are completed.
Thai authorities emphasized that the alleged fraudster will be flown back to China as soon as possible. There, he will face trial for the dashed pet dreams.
