PATTAYA, THAILAND – A young British tourist is fighting for his life after a severe traffic accident in Pattaya.
Ethan Lacey, a 20-year-old from Birmingham, suffered life-threatening brain injuries five weeks ago. Without valid travel insurance, his family is struggling with immense hospital costs and is now running a donation campaign, seeking every pound to facilitate his repatriation.
Accident with Pickup in Pattaya
The holiday trip to Pattaya, Thailand, ended in disaster for the young man from Castle Vale. According to initial findings, Ethan Lacey fell from a moving pickup truck and was subsequently hit by the same or another vehicle.
For five weeks, the 20-year-old has been battling severe brain injuries in the intensive care unit. The family was even informed after the incident that life-support machines might need to be switched off.
Despair at the Bedside
Ethan’s father, Kevin Lacey, traveled to Thailand immediately to be by his son’s side. However, the family is facing a harrowing struggle against uncertainty and language barriers on location. “Communication here makes it very difficult to know exactly what is going on,” Kevin Lacey described the desperate situation.
The uncertainty about Ethan’s true condition is driving his relatives to despair. Their greatest fear is that Ethan might die abroad, far from his loved ones. “That’s why we are desperately trying to bring him home for the medical treatment he really needs,” the father emphasized.

Volunteers scoured the streets with donation boxes, leaving no one untouched. Supporter Nicola Campbell described the tireless efforts: “We were everywhere we could be with buckets, collecting as much money as possible. And we didn’t let anyone pass us without asking for some spare change.”

The friends insist that Ethan deserves the same fair chance at recovery as anyone else. Nelly-May, the daughter of one of the helpers, articulated the core wish of the donors: “He should have the same opportunity to see his family as anyone else.”
