BANGKOK, THAILAND – A 23-year-old Bolt driver has been convicted of assault after allegedly striking a Japanese passenger multiple times in the head following an argument after a ride booked via the Bolt app.
Assault After Ride Dispute
The Japanese national, Hiroyuki Fukada, had booked a ride through the Bolt app from Soi Ratchaprarop 14 to Soi Sukhumvit 45. According to the complaint, the driver stopped the grey MG due to traffic congestion and asked Fukada to exit the vehicle.
As he was getting out, the driver reportedly followed the man and struck him multiple times on the head. Fukada sustained injuries and filed a complaint at the Thong Lor Police Station.
Police Order Investigation
On June 4, the Metropolitan Police Bureau directed investigators to look into the incident. Investigators identified the suspect as 23-year-old Dwit Chusongdej and launched a search for him.
The accused later presented himself at the Thong Lor Police Station, telling officers that a verbal exchange had sparked the argument. He stated that he was insulted and acted in anger.
Allegations Against Driver
The police charged the driver with assault, as well as using a vehicle contrary to its registration and driving without a passenger service license. The case files were forwarded to the South Bangkok District Court.
For the traffic violations, investigators also imposed a fine of 3,000 Baht.
Court: Custodial Sentence and Fine
On June 5 at 9:00 AM, the South Bangkok District Court convicted the defendant of assault. The court handed down a one-month prison sentence, suspended for one year, and imposed a fine of 5,000 Baht.
This brings the total penalties for the driver to include both the court’s sentence and the previously issued police fine.
Current Status of Prosecution
The passenger had demanded prosecution, and the police and court proceeded with the case from the complaint to conviction. The penalties encompass the suspended prison sentence and the fines from both the police and the court.
