NONG KHAI, THAILAND – A 22-year-old man was killed and his friend seriously injured when a homemade bomb exploded in a village in Nong Khai province.
Fatal blast on bamboo platform
Police in Sakhrai district arrived at a shocking scene, where the lifeless body of the young man lay on a bamboo platform in front of a house.
“His left hand had been torn off by the explosion,”
said investigators, who reported tissue scattered across the area. The 24-year-old friend was taken to hospital with injuries and now faced a possible charge of negligent manslaughter.
Improvised bomb workshop uncovered
At the site, officers discovered what they described as a complete bomb workshop. They found metal pipes of various sizes, metal fragments, nails and glass beads. Particularly alarming were dismantled firecrackers, from which gunpowder had apparently been extracted to build the explosive device.
The force of the blast was so strong it tore a hole in the house roof. An explosive ordnance disposal (EOD) team was called in to secure the area and remove any remaining dangerous material.
Family describes risky hobby
According to relatives, the 22-year-old had been an avid tinkerer.
“He often experimented with homemade explosive devices and rockets,”
said the family. They believed the incident was a tragic accident, saying the device exploded in his hands while it was being built.
The relatives said they suspected no malicious intent. The family planned to hold a traditional funeral in line with local customs.
Community in shock, inquiry continues
Police launched a comprehensive investigation to clarify the exact circumstances of the deadly accident. For residents of Ban Fang village, the incident was a profound shock, as such explosions were rare in the rural region of Thailand.
Warning against amateur experiments
Authorities and locals viewed the young man’s death as a warning to hobbyists. Handling explosives was not for laypeople, they stressed. Even seemingly harmless materials such as gunpowder from firecrackers could become deadly weapons in untrained hands, while the family mourned and officers continued to investigate the intended purpose of the bomb.
