SAMUT PRAKAN, THAILAND – A 47-year-old woman died after heavy drinking when no one at a house gathering called for medical help, believing she was only drunk.
Woman found dead hours after collapse
Police and rescue workers arrived at a house near Wat Rat Pho Thong at around 6:30 p.m. on 19 January, where they discovered the body of Warinthorn, 47, on the ground floor.
“She had already been dead for at least three hours,”
said an investigator at the scene. Empty alcohol bottles and leftover food were found beside her, with no signs of a struggle or external violence, pointing to a medical emergency that went unrecognized.
Drinking visit turns tragic
According to house owner Khanittha, 64, she had known the victim for two years, and this was the first visit specifically to drink together. Warinthorn reportedly arrived at about 11 a.m. with drinks and food, and her husband joined them around 1 p.m., with the atmosphere described as relaxed. As the day went on, the woman became increasingly drowsy, complained of feeling unwell, lost consciousness, briefly sat up again, then collapsed once more and lay motionless.
No emergency call despite clear danger
Those present assumed she was simply heavily intoxicated and believed she was sleeping off a drinking binge. No one called an ambulance or checked her vital signs, a misjudgment that proved fatal. When her husband returned in the evening to pick her up, he found that she was no longer breathing and immediately alerted rescue services, but the woman had already been dead for several hours.
Police examine possible negligence
Investigators from Mueang Samut Prakan Police Station treated the case as a tragic incident, with strong suspicion that extreme alcohol consumption combined with an undiagnosed pre-existing condition played a key role. They indicated that rapid medical treatment might have saved her life. An autopsy was expected to clarify the exact cause of death, while the husband and Khanittha were being questioned in detail about the circumstances and possible failure to render assistance, and authorities were considering potential criminal consequences.
Rising toll of alcohol-related deaths
The case was not isolated: almost at the same time, a 54-year-old man was found dead in his home in Buriram, where excessive alcohol consumption also played a central role. Such incidents were said to be increasing nationwide and raising concerns about public health services and prevention efforts. In Thailand, alcohol binges have become a growing social problem that regularly ends in tragedy, and many people still hesitate to seek professional help for unconscious individuals, underestimating that unconsciousness is always potentially life-threatening.
Authorities launch warning campaign
Police used the current case to step up a public information drive.
“An unconscious person is always a medical emergency. Do not hesitate to call the emergency service on 1669,”
said a police spokesperson. Even if it later turned out to be a harmless bout of drunkenness, they stressed that making an emergency call was the right decision.
Experts urge better first-aid training
Health experts recommended always checking breathing in unconscious people and placing them in the recovery position. In case of doubt, medical professionals should always be called in, they said, warning that fear of supposedly unnecessary call-outs must not endanger lives. They argued for nationwide information campaigns about the risks of alcohol abuse, widespread first-aid courses, and improved access to emergency services, especially in rural areas.
Family demands full clarification
For Warinthorn’s family, a painful period of mourning and coming to terms with the loss had begun, overshadowed by the question of whether her death could have been prevented. Relatives called for a thorough clarification of what happened and hoped for consequences that could prevent similar cases in the future. While the investigation was ongoing and the precise cause of death remained unclear pending autopsy results, authorities acknowledged that timely medical help might have made a crucial difference and that the case highlighted a broader social problem requiring greater attention and prevention.
