KOH CHANG, THAILAND – Two young men were killed and another seriously injured in a violent knife fight that erupted on the island’s Lonely Beach early on 26 October 2025.
What began as a routine night in one of Thailand’s best-known holiday destinations ended in tragedy, exposing simmering tensions among local youth communities.
From traffic quarrel to fatal confrontation
According to investigators, the confrontation unfolded around 02:40 a.m. on Soi Thianchai 1, a small street lined with bars and guesthouses near Lonely Beach. When officers arrived, they found Charoenrat Sangkakun and Nott Burachai lying severely injured in front of a closed bar. Both later died from their wounds. A third man, Kwanjai Manotham, was rushed to hospital with a stab wound to his ribs.
Police said the violence stemmed from an earlier traffic dispute. The suspect, identified only as Teeradet, also known locally as “Min”, allegedly cut across the victims’ path on his motorcycle. The two men reportedly followed him to a nearby bar, where the argument reignited and rapidly turned deadly.
Weapons recovered at the scene
Police led by Lieutenant Chingchai Chotisiri and Lieutenant Samran Ploywhaen discovered multiple weapons at the site — including a short knife, a serrated combat knife, a machete, and a spear-like stabbing weapon. The diverse arsenal suggested that both sides had come prepared, or that the fight escalated with whatever weapons were at hand.
Forensics teams from Trat province arrived soon after daylight to document the scene. They collected evidence, secured surveillance footage, and began interviewing witnesses to reconstruct the sequence of events.
Suspect surrendered after sustaining injuries
Later that same morning, the suspect reportedly contacted Koh Chang Police Station to turn himself in. Police sources confirmed that Teeradet, who works at a local entertainment venue, had visible injuries to his face and head, apparently from being struck with a hard object during the altercation.
Prosecutors are preparing a preliminary manslaughter charge, though officers emphasized that the investigation remains active. It is not yet clear which weapon caused the fatal blows or who first initiated the violence.
Local tensions beneath the tourist image
Authorities stressed that no tourists were involved in the incident — all participants were local residents. The case has nonetheless unsettled Koh Chang’s image as a peaceful island retreat in the Gulf of Thailand. Behind the postcard beaches, police believe there are long-running frictions between local youth groups, sometimes linked to nightlife venues or motorbike gangs.
“THIS INCIDENT SHOWS THAT EVEN SMALL DISPUTES CAN TURN DEADLY WHEN WEAPONS AND ALCOHOL ARE INVOLVED,”
one officer remarked in a statement following the incident.
Police to boost presence as community mourns
Authorities announced plans for an increased police presence around Lonely Beach to prevent further violence. The island, part of Trat province, attracts thousands of domestic and foreign visitors every year. Local residents expressed concern that such crimes could tarnish the community’s reputation and threaten tourism livelihoods.
For now, grief has overtaken anger. Two families are left mourning their lost sons, and a close-knit island community faces painful questions about what went wrong in the early hours of that October morning.
