PHUKET, THAILAND – Two British tourists died in separate beach incidents in southern Thailand within three days, drawing renewed attention to monsoon-season sea risks.
91-year-old tourist died off Koh Lanta resort
On Koh Lanta, a 91-year-old British holidaymaker died on a Tuesday morning while swimming in front of the Lanta Pura Beach Resort. He had reportedly been in the water for about an hour as his wife watched from only a few metres away, with nothing initially indicating danger.
Witnesses said the man suddenly clutched his chest and appeared to struggle to stay afloat before disappearing below the surface. Lifeguards rushed to the scene and pulled him ashore within moments, but he was already unresponsive and could not be revived.
Police arrived at around 11 a.m., recorded the incident and ordered an autopsy. There were no official warnings of heavy surf at that time, although conditions could change rapidly during the monsoon period.
37-year-old Jason Lambert swept away at Freedom Beach
Just 72 hours earlier, a second fatal incident occurred at Freedom Beach in Phuket. Jason Lambert, a 37-year-old tourist from Ipswich, entered the water at around 10 a.m., with conditions described as apparently harmless.
Without warning, a powerful wave reportedly crashed over him and a rip current dragged him quickly away from the shore. Other holidaymakers saw him go under and immediately tried to help.
Bystanders managed to pull Lambert back onto the beach and began cardiopulmonary resuscitation. Police received the emergency call at 12:30 p.m., but despite all efforts, he could not be saved.
Similarities between the cases but no official link
Both deaths happened late in the morning at popular beaches and despite rapid rescue attempts. Authorities did not draw any formal connection between the two incidents, but experts repeatedly warned that the sea could be treacherous during the monsoon.
Officials noted that in some locations warning flags were not raised everywhere at the time. Both cases nevertheless showed how seemingly calm water could turn into a deadly trap within seconds.
Investigations under way and families in contact with authorities
On Koh Lanta, investigators focused on the sudden medical collapse of the elderly swimmer, who was reported to have a heart pacemaker. His wife told officials that he had shown no health problems during their stay at the resort.
In Phuket, the cause of death was attributed to natural forces in the water, which could overwhelm even strong swimmers. Repatriation procedures for both victims to the United Kingdom were reported to be in progress, with relatives said to be in ongoing contact with the Thai authorities.
Warnings over unpredictable monsoon seas
In both Krabi province, which includes Koh Lanta, and in Phuket, officials had long warned about monsoon-season hazards. These include invisible currents, suddenly rising waves and undertows capable of pulling even fit swimmers away from the shore.
Lifeguards were stationed on many beaches but could not cover every stretch of coastline at all times. The recent deaths starkly illustrated how quickly a beach holiday could turn from a dream into a tragedy during the monsoon months.
