Fatal Collision in Pre-Dawn Darkness
At approximately 5:15 am, a black Toyota Innova, registered in Samut Prakan, lost control near Ban Chang in the Mueang District. The vehicle careened across the road, hit the central median, and collided violently with a traffic sign.
Police Lieutenant Suthon Jittapoom, along with rescue teams from the Poh Teck Tung Foundation, rushed to the scene. The aftermath was devastating: three passengers were trapped inside the wreckage, requiring extraction with cutting equipment.
Two Lives Lost, Seven Injured
Despite immediate rescue efforts, a man and a woman succumbed to their injuries at the scene. Seven others – six men and one woman – suffered varied injuries, with one in critical condition, and were swiftly transported to Pathum Thani Hospital.
Communication hurdles added to the emergency’s complexity, as all occupants were Myanmar nationals who did not speak Thai. Investigators found clothing and personal items inside the vehicle, crucial for the ongoing investigation.
Possible Causes: Darkness and Fatigue?
Initial investigations suggest several possible causes: unfamiliarity with the route or driver fatigue could be factors. Furthermore, inadequate street lighting in the area had been a known issue, contributing to perilous driving conditions.
“This area frequently witnesses accidents due to pitch darkness at night,” a police spokesperson noted. Such hazardous visibility likely played a significant role in this grave incident.
Forensic Examination Underway
The bodies of the deceased were sent to the Ministry of Justice’s forensic institute for autopsy. Lieutenant Suthon personally oversaw the accident site investigation and coordinated forensic efforts.
The team is now focused on tracking the group’s travel route and assessing the driver’s condition. Authorities aim to determine the migrants’ origin and destination.
