Tourist Rescued After Phuket Waterfall Fall

Dutch woman evacuated on stretcher after hours-long jungle operation near Bang Pae Waterfall

PHUKET, THAILAND – A Dutch tourist was rescued after suffering a serious fall during a hike near Bang Pae Waterfall, triggering a gruelling hours-long jungle operation.

Fall at popular waterfall hike

The woman had been hiking with a male companion near the popular Bang Pae Waterfall when she lost her balance on uneven, mountainous terrain. She fell and sustained a complicated arm fracture and severe bruising to her leg, while her companion remained uninjured but was unable to assist her on his own. The situation was serious, as she could not move and the area was completely inaccessible to rescue vehicles.

Rescue team faces four-kilometre jungle approach

Alerted emergency responders faced a major challenge and had to advance more than four kilometres on foot through dense forest to reach the injured tourist. Carrying heavy equipment, they made their way up a steep, slippery path, racing against time to provide first aid as quickly as possible. After the difficult approach, the team stabilised her serious injuries on site before beginning the actual evacuation.

Five-hour struggle to carry patient out

The woman was carefully placed on a stretcher for the return journey, which turned into a nerve-racking ordeal along narrow, steep and slippery sections where every step had to be secured. The rescue workers coordinated continuously and worked at full capacity, aware that a fall by the carriers could have had catastrophic consequences. In total, the marathon operation lasted over five hours, testing both the team and the patience of the injured tourist.

Hospital transfer and companion’s ordeal

Exhausted but successful, the rescuers eventually reached a spot accessible to vehicles and transported the woman directly to Thalang Hospital. Doctors confirmed that the Dutch tourist was in a stable condition and receiving treatment, while no information was initially available on how long she would need to stay. Her companion remained by her side throughout the operation, and the incident cast a lasting shadow over their holiday.

Authorities issue warning to Thailand visitors

Local authorities used the incident to issue a pointed warning, noting that many popular nature attractions such as waterfalls can harbour hidden dangers. They advised visitors to wear appropriate footwear, carry sufficient water and share their hiking route with others before setting out.

“Never underestimate the terrain.”

said a spokesperson, who pointed to the risks behind Thailand’s natural beauty.

Beauty and risk in Thailand’s nature

Officials stressed that this rescue showed how Thailand’s landscapes can be both stunning and treacherous. According to their assessment, without the determined efforts of the rescue team, the day at Bang Pae Waterfall could have ended fatally. The case underlined the need for greater awareness among visitors when exploring remote or challenging natural sites.
