Russian cyber fraud suspect seized in Phuket

Immigration officers arrested the man wanted over alleged mock account fraud network

PHUKET, THAILAND – Immigration officers in Phuket arrested an internationally wanted Russian man suspected of playing a key role in a major online fraud ring using so‑called mock accounts.

Arrest on condominium parking lot

The Russian suspect had apparently been fleeing justice in Lampang and was hiding in a condominium in Phuket’s Kathu district. A tip from police in Lampang led investigators to his location on the island. On Saturday at 5:30 p.m., when the wanted man stepped onto the condo parking lot, a joint team from immigration and criminal police moved in and detained him under a warrant issued by the Lampang Provincial Court.

Serious charges over alleged mock account scheme

According to investigators, the indictment was complex and severe, including conspiracy to commit fraud against the public. The man was also accused of entering false data into computer systems to cause damage. The alleged scheme involved “mock accounts” that intercepted stolen funds from online fraud cases and forwarded them on, with the resulting financial loss described as substantial.

Over 60 items seized for forensic analysis

Officers seized more than 60 pieces of evidence during the arrest, including numerous electronic devices, mobile phones and memory cards. Investigators believed the items were either obtained through criminal activities or used to carry them out. All seized evidence was handed over for forensic examination in an effort to fully uncover the suspected fraud network.

Part of tougher stance on foreign crime

Police Colonel Khemachat Wattananapakasem, head of Phuket Immigration, confirmed that the arrest formed part of a strict policy toward foreign offenders. Authorities have focused on transnational crime networks, including online fraud, call‑center scams and illegal nominee businesses.

“The Phuket immigration police remained proactive to ensure the safety of life and property.”

said Khemachat Wattananapakasem, head of Phuket Immigration.

Next steps for the suspect

The arrested Russian was handed over to investigators to begin formal criminal proceedings, and further charges could follow as the case developed. Thailand cooperated closely with international partners in such matters, and extradition to his home country was described as a possible next step. For Thai authorities, the case was seen as another success in the fight against cybercrime that had treated the country as an apparent safe haven.

Clear message to foreign offenders

Officials said the arrest sent a clear signal to foreign criminals that Thailand was not a safe hiding place. The effective cooperation between police in Lampang and the immigration bureau in Phuket was highlighted as proof of the policy’s impact. For potential victims of such fraud rings, the case represented a step toward justice, even though the financial damage was often impossible to fully reverse.
