Tourist assault sparks safety concerns

French suspect arrested after alleged rape of US woman on Ko Pha-ngan

KO PHA-NGAN, THAILAND – A French man was arrested after allegedly raping an American tourist following the Full Moon Party on the island of Ko Pha-ngan.

Alleged assault after Full Moon Party

A 22-year-old American woman had travelled with friends from Ko Samui to attend the Full Moon Party. Around 2 a.m. on 6 December, heavily intoxicated, she lost contact with her group. In this vulnerable situation, she was approached by a 35-year-old French man named Romain, who offered to help her find her friends but instead took her to a hostel in the village of Haad Rin.

Attack in hostel room and police report

In the hostel room, the French national allegedly assaulted the defenseless woman. According to the police report, the tourist regained consciousness during the attack and cried out for help, prompting the perpetrator to flee the room immediately. Injured and in shock, she reported the incident to the tourist police, who initiated an investigation, assisted her in filing a complaint, and arranged a medical examination at a hospital on Ko Samui.

Rapid investigation and arrest

Investigators from the special unit of the Surat Thani Provincial Police quickly identified the suspect and sought an arrest warrant from the court on Ko Samui. With the judicial order in hand, officers raided a room on Ko Pha-ngan and arrested the French man Romain, transferring him to the local police station for questioning. He was charged with “rape by sexual intercourse with a defenseless person”, and the investigation proceeded at full speed.

Pressure on party island’s image

The case cast a stark light on the darker side of party tourism on Ko Pha-ngan, where the Full Moon Party draws thousands of young revellers each month. In the anonymous crowds and under the influence of alcohol, especially women travelling alone can quickly become easy targets, raising new questions about existing security measures. Local authorities came under pressure to defend the island’s image as a safe destination.

Police vow zero tolerance

The swift clarification of the case and the arrest sent a strong message that the Thai police would not tolerate such crimes against visitors.

“We pursue offenders targeting tourists with the full severity of the law.”

said the authorities, underscoring that the case was being handled with high priority. The French suspect could face a long prison sentence in Thailand if found guilty.

Safety advice for travellers

Travel experts advised partygoers never to leave their drinks unattended and always to stay in groups. They recommended that tourists save the emergency number of the tourist police (1155) on their phones and follow standard safety precautions in large crowds. Despite this serious isolated incident, Thailand was still described as a safe travel destination, provided common-sense measures were observed.

Victim’s action may prevent further crimes

For the young woman, the dream holiday ended in a nightmare, leaving her traumatised. Her decision to immediately report the crime may have prevented further assaults and highlighted persistent safety gaps in popular nightlife spots. The case left the island community questioning how such an attack could occur amid one of its most famous events.
