KANCHANABURI, THAILAND – A scenic tourist train ride turned chaotic on Saturday when a shunting locomotive slammed into a stationary passenger train, injuring 18 people, four of them seriously.
Collision on scenic route
The passenger train on the picturesque route from Kanchanaburi to Nam Tok had made a scheduled stop at Wang Yen station, where the locomotive was normally changed. As the shunting engine moved to couple with the carriages, it suddenly reversed at high speed.
With what witnesses described as “great force”, it crashed into the first stationary passenger carriage, shaking all six cars of the tourist train. The collision turned the quiet station on the famed Death Railway into a scene of panic.
Passengers describe moments of fear
A witness on board recalled the shocking seconds before and during the impact.
“The train had almost one hundred Thai and foreign tourists,”
said the passenger.
“While we were sitting in the carriages, there was a very violent impact. Tourists in every carriage were thrown around.”
said the passenger.
Heads hit and shattered windows as people were knocked from their seats to the floor. The holiday idyll quickly became, in the words of witnesses, a place of horror instead of a peaceful countryside journey.
Investigators blame brake failure
Investigators quickly identified a technical failure as the likely cause. The brakes of the shunting locomotive reportedly failed at the crucial moment, leaving the driver unable to stop.
The engine then ploughed unchecked into the six parked passenger cars, suffering such severe damage that it was no longer operational. A replacement locomotive was dispatched to return the shaken passengers and the damaged carriages to Kanchanaburi.
Emergency response and injured tourists
Rescue teams at the scene provided first aid immediately. In total, 18 injured passengers were counted, including four who were seriously hurt.
All of the injured were taken directly to Phahol Pholpayuhasena Hospital. Among them were both Thai and international tourists whose holiday plans were abruptly shattered by the accident.
Witnesses described an unsettling image on the platform: a foreign tourist tending to a small child while waiting, along with others, for the replacement train.
Safety and tourism image under scrutiny
The incident raised pointed questions about safety on Thailand’s rail network, especially on historic and heavily visited routes. How such a brake failure could occur on a train carrying tourists is now at the centre of attention.
The scenic Death Railway line is one of the country’s most popular tourist attractions and a showcase for Thai tourism. Rail authorities now faced pressure to determine whether this was an isolated malfunction or a sign of deeper systemic problems.
Operators and travellers were expected to monitor the situation closely, while Thailand’s rail services came under growing scrutiny to review their safety standards comprehensively. For the injured holidaymakers, the dream of a tranquil train journey through nature ended abruptly because of a single defective brake block.
