Thailand’s new Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul has disclosed his wealth, sparking both astonishment and critical questions. The 58-year-old leader of the Bhumjaithai Party submitted his wealth declaration to the National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC), a requirement for government officials. The figures are staggering: 3.9 billion baht (approximately 98 million euros) in total assets, including 1.09 billion baht in cash and bank deposits across 24 accounts.
But that’s not all: Anutin owns three private jets, two speed boats, a luxury residence in Bangkok, four high-end cars, 22 watches, 24 amulets, and eleven pieces of Benjarong porcelain from the 13th century—a historic privilege once reserved for the royal family. “This is no ordinary political fortune,” commented a financial expert.
From Construction Tycoon to Prime Minister
Anutin’s wealth largely comes from his construction company, Sino-Thai Engineering and Construction, a publicly listed firm that received numerous lucrative government contracts, including the construction of Suvarnabhumi Airport and the parliament building, which faced an eight-year delay and 10 billion baht over budget.
His rise into politics was rapid: after the Constitutional Court removed former Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra for ethics violations, Anutin assumed office. His royalist alignment and connections were key—political observers note, “About 75% of the new senators are linked to him or his party.”
Opposition and Promises: Elections in Four Months
The opposition People’s Party, holding the largest bloc in parliament, supports Anutin under one condition: he must dissolve parliament within four months and hold new elections and a constitutional referendum. This delicate deal could shape Thailand’s political future.
Anutin emphasizes his independence: “I was not involved in the Senate selection process.” However, investigators are monitoring hundreds of individuals linked to election manipulation and money laundering. His wealth disclosure also casts a shadow over political culture.
