Bangkok, Thailand – The Central Criminal Court for Corruption and Misconduct Cases has issued over 2,500 verdicts since its opening in October 2016, marking a decade-long campaign against abuse of power and bribery.
Thousands of Verdicts Against Corrupt Officials
Court spokesperson Suriyan Hongwilai presented the latest figures on the judiciary body’s work. Since October 1, 2016, the specialized court has handled a total of 2,658 misconduct cases.
Of these proceedings, judges have already successfully concluded 2,554 cases. This corresponds to a remarkable closure rate of over 96 percent of all filed complaints.
Hard Fight Against Abuse of Office
The majority of charges referred to Section 157 of the Thai Criminal Code. In 1,742 cases, the focus was specifically on negligence or intentional abuse of office.
Additionally, the court handled 222 cases of embezzlement by officials. The forgery of documents also occupied the judiciary intensively in another 204 proceedings.
Citizens Sue Powerful Authorities
An academic forum marking the tenth anniversary highlighted the rights of Thai citizens. A former judge explained there that private individuals may file lawsuits directly against independent organizations.
A prerequisite for such a lawsuit is the direct impact caused by the authority’s actions. The right to redress remains a high judicial good for every citizen.
Lawsuit Against Election Commission Fails
Recently, reserve senators filed a lawsuit against the Election Commission over possible collusion. They accused the commission of deliberately delaying key investigations during the senate elections.
The court dismissed the lawsuit, however, because no specific personal harm was demonstrated. The plaintiff was not recognized as a direct victim in that particular case.
Justice Through Fast Legal Proceedings
The judiciary places great emphasis on swift handling of corruption cases. Currently, only 103 proceedings are in the witness testimony phase.
No single case at the corruption court has been pending for longer than one year. This underscores the authorities’ commitment to speedy and efficient justice.
