NAKHON RATCHASIMA, THAILAND – A massive scandal involving fake birth certificates is currently shaking Thailand’s civil registration system. Criminal networks systematically inserted new identities into the state database to illegally grant Thai citizenship to foreigners.

Investigators in Nakhon Ratchasima discovered at least 27 suspicious birth certificates with a clear pattern. The documents usually list a Chinese mother and a Thai father to obtain citizenship fraudulently.
Participants paid bribes of between 10,000 and 30,000 THB per case. These amounts appear small compared to the lifetime rights that a Thai identity provides.
Fraud in Districts Without Hospitals
Particularly striking is the location where these documents were issued by authorities. Many of the fake certificates come from districts that have no hospitals at all.
This unusual cluster of home births in remote areas eventually alarmed Thai investigators. Authorities are now using modern data analysis to detect such irregularities across the country.
Cybercrime in the Civil Registration Office
The perpetrators acted extremely professionally and with high criminal energy. They stole usernames and passwords from innocent government officials to secretly input the fake data.
