Thailand Uncovers Major Forex Fraud

DSI raids freeze millions in assets and implicate prominent figures in elaborate scam.

BANGKOK, Thailand – Thailand’s Department of Special Investigation (DSI) has uncovered one of the largest foreign exchange fraud cases in recent years, leading to the freezing of numerous accounts and seizure of significant assets.

The DSI, in collaboration with cybercrime police and the forensic institute, conducted coordinated raids across 24 locations in Bangkok, Pathum Thani, Samut Prakan, and Samut Sakhon. These operations followed a six-month investigation into transaction streams.

The extensive seizures include 77 bank accounts, comprising 20 corporate and 57 private accounts, all of which have been frozen. Authorities also blocked access to several cryptocurrency wallets.

DSI Strikes Simultaneously at 24 Locations

Investigators moved into multiple provinces, meticulously tracking financial flows. The operation aimed to dismantle a sophisticated network suspected of widespread fraud.

The culmination of this investigation resulted in an unprecedented asset freeze and seizure of physical valuables. This action is expected to have a significant impact on the illicit financial activities within the country.

65 Million Baht Cash and Luxury Cars Seized

Along with frozen accounts, investigators confiscated 65.27 million Baht in cash and approximately 600,000 Baht in foreign currency. The confiscated luxury items paint a picture of significant wealth accumulation by those involved.

Among the seized items were five luxury vehicles, 15 other cars, and four motorcycles. Additionally, authorities secured gold bars and jewelry weighing 50 Baht, 12 kilograms of silver bars, 113 luxury watches, and over 40 designer handbags. The investigation also led to the confiscation of 55 computers, 30 mobile phones, four hardware cryptocurrency wallets, and three firearms.

Three-Tiered Scheme with Brokers, Recruiters, and Payment Service Providers

The investigation initially focused on transactions originating from the online gambling sector. However, investigators soon discovered exceptionally large money flows through companies linked to foreign exchange trading, a sector not licensed for private domestic clients by the Bank of Thailand.

The DSI identified a three-tiered operational structure. Firms such as QRS Global, HFM, GOFX, and Eterwealth acted as brokers. Recruiters, including individuals identified as Ajarn P, Coach James, JP Global, and Acme, lured potential victims through social media platforms by showcasing luxurious lifestyles. Payment service providers like Rainey Corporation and PaySolution were instrumental in moving the illicit funds.

Small Initial Profits, Then Total Loss of Access

According to the investigators’ findings, the network employed a classic scam pattern. New investors were initially allowed to withdraw small profits, encouraging them to deposit larger sums. This strategy built trust, which was then abruptly shattered.

Payouts began to be delayed, new conditions were imposed, and eventually, access to deposited funds was completely blocked. It is believed that fresh capital from new investors was used to sustain the operation and maintain the illusion of legitimacy for existing participants.

Over 28 Million Baht Flowed into an MP’s Account

The most explosive revelation points to Pawawut Pongwitayapanu, a list MP from the People’s Party. The DSI confirmed 14 separate transfers into his private account, all occurring on a single day in July 2024. Each transaction was approximately two million Baht, with the total sum exceeding 28 million Baht.

Both Pawawut and actor Film Rattapoom Tokongsub are not currently on the list of suspects, according to the DSI. Officials emphasized that transactions alone do not constitute criminal behavior. Both individuals have denied any wrongdoing and will be given an opportunity to explain their involvement.

Actor as Advisor – But No Charges Yet

Film Rattapoom has been linked to a company operating on the brokerage side of the network. The DSI indicated that he allegedly acted as an advisor and was a driving force behind the operation. He has also not been classified as a suspect.

Investigators plan to formally summon Film Rattapoom, similar to Pawawut, after the conclusion of the current parliamentary session. If the MP voluntarily provides information, clarification of his role could be expedited.

Social Media as a Hunting Ground for Investors

Investigators described how recruiters extensively used platforms like Facebook and Instagram to offer trading courses, mentorship programs, and investment tips. The displayed wealth, including expensive cars, watches, and designer bags, was a deliberate tactic to impress potential victims and project an image of expertise.

According to the DSI, individuals living abroad but residing in Thailand, who often possess substantial investment capital, were specifically targeted. More than 500 investors have since come forward to the authorities with complaints.

Billion-Baht Damages and Rising Victim Count

Investigators anticipate damages in the billions of Baht and expect the number of victims to continue growing. The seized assets are currently undergoing scrutiny to determine ownership and the origin of funds, while digital evidence is being analyzed.

Authorities are planning further measures to identify perpetrators and protect victims. The Bank of Thailand reiterated that it does not issue domestic licenses for forex trading to private clients and issued a warning against illegal trading platforms.
