Thailand sets 2026 tourism record target

TAT banks on ‘Amazing 5 Economy’ to boost revenue and shift from mass tourism

BANGKOK, THAILAND – Thailand’s tourism agency set an ambitious 2026 target after a mixed year, aiming to lift visitor numbers and revenue with a new five-pillar strategy.

Mixed results in 2025 tourism performance

Thailand recorded 32.97 million international arrivals in 2025, a decline of 7.23 percent from the previous year. Despite fewer visitors, the sector generated 2.7 trillion baht in revenue, driven by more long-haul tourists from the United States and the United Kingdom. Domestic tourism also expanded, with Thais making 202 million trips within the country, a 2.7 percent increase.

‘Amazing 5 Economy’ shifts focus to value

For 2026, the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) outlined its “Amazing 5 Economy” masterplan to promote qualitative rather than purely quantitative growth. The “Life Economy” pillar positions Thailand as a prime destination for luxury wellness and medical tourism under the slogan “Healing is the New Luxury.” The “Sub-Culture Economy” targets niche segments such as film crews, sports travelers and private jet owners.

Nightlife, sustainability and digital platforms

Under the “Night Economy,” TAT aimed to expand creative nightlife offerings to lengthen stays and increase visitor spending. The “Circular Economy” focused on sustainable tourism, easing pressure on overcrowded hotspots by steering travelers toward secondary destinations. The “Platform Economy” sought to deliver seamless digital experiences from booking to cashless payments.

Record targets and regional competition

TAT governor Thapanee Kiatphaibool announced the core objectives of the campaign: 36.7 million international visitors and three trillion baht in tourism revenue, equivalent to about 75 billion euros.

“We must make decisions more quickly, act more agilely and optimise our strengths.”

said Thapanee Kiatphaibool, TAT governor.
She viewed competition as intense, particularly from a resurgent China and dynamic Vietnam.

New flights and celebrity ambassador

The tourism push was already under way, supported by new direct connections from Europe. Belavia Belarusian Airlines began operating flights from Minsk to U-Tapao, serving Pattaya, and to Phuket. Global star Lalisa “Lisa” Manoban of Blackpink served as the first “Amazing Thailand Ambassador” and the face of the campaign.

‘Healing Thailand’ campaign launch

Her first television commercial, “Healing Thailand,” was scheduled to premiere on 28 January. TAT placed strong emphasis on modern communication and maintaining continuous dialogue with travelers. The agency aimed to use this media presence to reinforce Thailand’s positioning in wellness, lifestyle and experience-driven tourism.

Domestic trends and Chiang Mai showcase

The domestic market remained a central pillar of the overall strategy, shaped by five key trends in 2025: wellness trips, escapes into silence, culinary experiences tailored for social media, emotionally driven journeys and luxury combined with nature conservation. A flagship initiative was the “Chiang Mai Night Market”, where light installations and art transformed the San Kamphaeng and Tha Phae walking streets until 1 March. TAT expected at least 186 million baht in additional revenue from the project, which offered free entry and shuttle bus services.

Balancing volume with higher-spending visitors

The new approach marked a clear shift away from pursuing sheer visitor numbers toward attracting “high-value” tourists with larger budgets. Its focus on luxury, niche markets and sustainability directly responded to past problems of overburdened destinations and image challenges. Whether the strategy would enable Thailand to reach the symbolic three-trillion-baht mark in 2026 remained open, but the restructuring of the country’s key industry had begun.
