BANGKOK, THAILAND – Thailand’s Social Security Office reminded insured people ahead of Songkran that they could receive emergency treatment at any nearby hospital without advance payment, provided follow-up care was reported to the responsible hospital within 72 hours.
Social Security Office issues Songkran reminder
On 12 April 2026, Kanchana Phulkaew, Secretary-General of the Social Security Office (SSO), said insured persons should pay particular attention to rapid medical care in emergencies during the Songkran festival.
She advised people to always carry their national ID card to make admission and treatment at medical facilities easier.
Emergency care anywhere without advance payment
According to the agency, insured persons who suffered an acute illness or accident could immediately go to the nearest hospital and receive treatment there.
No advance payment was required in such emergencies, as this fell under the state regulation “Emergency, critical: treatment everywhere” (UCEP – Universal Coverage for Emergency Patients).
Support from SSO offices nationwide
The Social Security Office stated that its offices in Bangkok, as well as provincial and branch offices across the country, were ready to assist insured persons and facilitate coordination.
Insured people therefore did not need to worry in an emergency, as the authorities were meant to help with processing and arrangements.
72-hour deadline to notify responsible hospital
Even though emergency treatment could begin immediately, insured persons or their relatives were asked to inform the hospital responsible under their respective benefit entitlement within 72 hours.
This was intended to ensure that follow-up treatment would be covered and that medical care could continue without interruption.
Songkran travel period with higher accident risk
Songkran was described as one of the biggest travel periods of the year in Thailand, when many people were on the move and the risk of road traffic accidents increased.
Against this backdrop, the agency stressed that insured persons should know their rights in order to obtain medical help quickly and without financial barriers in an emergency.
