Thailand on Alert: Severe Summer Storms in May

Meteorological Department warns of dangerous weather shift with heavy storms and rain from May 4-6, followed by monsoon onset mid-month.

BANGKOK, THAILAND – The Meteorological Department warns the population of a drastic weather change in May. Heavy summer storms and increasing rainfall mark the difficult transition to this year’s rainy season.

Dangerous summer storms threaten nationwide

Across all of Thailand, people must expect severe storms in the coming days. From 4 to 6 May, there is a high risk of violent thunderstorms.

The cause of the dangerous weather is the collision of cold air with extremely hot air masses. During the day, it remains oppressively hot before discharges form in the afternoon.

Wind shifts on the coast

Between 8 and 12 May, the wind direction over land will change noticeably. This leads to persistent rainfall, which will especially affect areas along the Andaman coast.

Meteorologists are closely monitoring the unstable situation, as the winds remain very variable during this phase. Residents in coastal regions should prepare for wet days and strong wind.

Rainy season begins mid-May

From mid-month, signs of the final seasonal shift intensify. Between 15 and 17 May, the transition into the official rainy season becomes increasingly noticeable.

Although precipitation is still irregular in early May, intensity steadily increases toward mid-month. The oppressive summer heat then slowly yields to regular downpours.

Precaution important for farmers

The Meteorological Department advises all citizens, especially farmers, to urgently plan water storage. Since the weather in this transitional phase is extremely volatile, close monitoring of forecasts remains vital.
