BANGKOK, THAILAND – A leading climate expert has issued a stark warning that Thailand could be hit by a “Super El Niño” event in 2027, potentially bringing extreme heat, drought, and chaotic weather conditions to the country. The probability of a dangerous intensification stands at over 60 percent.

Associate Professor Seree Supratid, Director of the Center for Climate Change and Disaster at Rangsit University, sees clear warning signals. International climate models confirm that El Niño conditions are already building globally.
With more than a 60 percent certainty, the expert stated, the phenomenon will intensify into a severe and far-reaching event. The consequences for Thailand would be massive.

The specific temperature forecast is alarming: average temperatures nationwide could skyrocket by 1.5 to 2.5 degrees Celsius by April next year. Some regions may face droughts, while others simultaneously experience floods.
For Bangkok, Seree anticipates average temperatures between 39 and 41 degrees Celsius. The perceived heat index could climb to an unbearable 50 to 54 degrees Celsius—an immediate danger for heatstroke and other heat-related illnesses.

The scorching heat will put the country’s power supply to the test. The expert warns that the exploding demand for air conditioning could overload the grids and trigger localized power outages.
Furthermore, the extremely high temperatures accelerate evaporation. This drastically shrinks water reserves, which are vital for agriculture and ecosystems.
