BANGKOK, Thailand – The Thai Meteorological Department warns of a dangerous week ahead with heavy rain, floods and wave heights up to three meters.
The TMD forecasts severe downpours across multiple regions from August 4 to 9. Northern, northeastern and eastern parts face the worst risk.
Heavy rain threatens north, northeast and east
Critical conditions are expected in the upper north, upper northeast and east. Localised very heavy rain could trigger flash floods and widespread flooding.
The west coast of the south also faces an elevated danger from massive rainfall. The TMD urges residents in vulnerable areas to stay alert.
Monsoon trough brings moist air
An active monsoon trough is driving the storm threat. From August 4 to 5 it stretches from Myanmar over northern Laos into a system above northern Vietnam.
The trough then shifts south from August 6 to 8. It crosses directly over the upper north and upper northeast of Thailand, pulling immense moisture inland.
Southwest monsoon gains strength
The TMD predicts a sharp intensification of the southwest monsoon from August 5 to 9. Winds will ramp up over the Andaman Sea, the entire country and the Gulf of Thailand.
The combination of the southward-moving trough and the stronger monsoon creates a volatile weather setup. It fuels the predicted torrential rains and violent gusts.
Waves up to three meters high
At sea conditions worsen fast. For the upper Andaman Sea the TMD warns of waves reaching two to three meters until August 9.
In local thunderstorms waves can top three meters. In the upper Gulf of Thailand and lower Andaman Sea waves around two meters are expected, spiking above that in storms.
