BANGKOK, Thailand – Thailand is preparing for a week of heavy rainfall. The Meteorological Department has issued a warning for a significant intensification of precipitation starting Sunday, primarily affecting the country’s south and east. A powerful monsoon trough colliding with moist southwesterly winds is responsible, with the agency not ruling out dangerous flash floods and sudden water surges.

Experts describe the weather situation as a volatile mix. A low-pressure trough has settled over the northern and upper northeastern parts of the country. Simultaneously, strong southwesterly winds are pushing inland from the Andaman Sea and over the Gulf of Thailand. This confluence is expected to cause torrential rain in the coming days.

The meteorologists are particularly concerned about the eastern regions and western areas in the south, anticipating the most intense rainfall there. For the start of the week on Sunday, the department issued a specific warning for the eastern Gulf province of Trat, and on the west coast, Ranong and Phangnga, both located on the northern Andaman Sea. On Monday, the focus shifts slightly. In addition to eastern Trat, the western provinces of Tak, bordering Myanmar, and Kanchanaburi are expected to experience torrential rain.

Starting Tuesday, the severe weather zone will expand. The east side of the Gulf, including Chanthaburi and Trat, will be affected, while Ranong and Phangnga in the west will face continuous rain again. By Wednesday, the list of threatened areas will be complete. Alongside Chanthaburi, Trat, Ranong, and Phangnga, Chumphon, marking the transition to the southern region on the west side of the Gulf, will also be under threat.

The threat remains high on Thursday. The agency expects severe weather in Bueng Kan in the northeast, eastern Chanthaburi and Trat, and the southern provinces of Chumphon, Ranong, and Phangnga. By the end of the work week on Friday, the threat will concentrate again on the west and east, with the department forecasting very heavy rain for Kanchanaburi, as well as Chanthaburi and Trat.
